Let me just say this about drop to zero, I don’t say too much on these forms, but I do want there to be a good understanding for those who don’t understand it. Because up until about three months ago, I didn’t understand it either. I am a new hire at NK. I got Las Vegas out of training, bid Fort Lauderdale, but wasn’t able to get it instantly. So I had one month that I was technically based in Las Vegas. When you get done with training, Spirit will schedule your next month as a “relief line” out of whatever base you have. I had already completely set up my life in Fort Lauderdale, so Las Vegas was going to be a huge pain in the neck to commute back-and-forth to. Every morning I would get online and look at the reserve grid. When people say the grid changes by the minute, they aren’t joking. But even if a day goes red, in two hours, it may be green again, just because it goes red doesn’t mean that it won’t go back green, and from what I’ve seen it always will at some point.
. As a brand new pilot with no seniority, I was able to drop my entire month in Las Vegas, and then pick up the same amount of flying out of Fort Lauderdale. This is the kind of flexibility that I see pilots over here, raving about, and I can see now firsthand that it is pretty amazing. Let’s say, for example your dad is not feeling well, and he lives in Dallas, but you’re based in Fort Lauderdale. If you wanted to, you could drop your entire month of flying out of Fort Lauderdale, and then pick up all of your flying out of Dallas to go spend time with your father. The other thing where I see it works pretty cool. I talked to a brand new Las Vegas first officer. He was able to drop his relief line out of Las Vegas, and then put himself on the X list (in base 200 percent trip list) for the entire month that he dropped. He credited 190 hours that month. Working about as hard as he would have with his regular line. When I was trying to drop my trips, I literally sat there with my iPad in my hand, refreshing the reserve grid as often as I could. It took a little time, and it took a little work, but now I have seen firsthand how it is definitely not something that favors seniority at all, it seems to be a very good benefit to have and I think it works well. Hopefully this helps a little.

just a note you could have done the same thing with a swap pending a green grid in the base you were dropping from which was a prerequisite to dropping to zero in the first place. If your intention is to shuffle your schedule or change trips to more desirable ones you don’t need drop to zero you just need a green grid if you’re doing it out of base. In base you don’t even need the grid

could I have changed bases for that with the system you speak of? I totally understand being able to swap and drop around within base. But could I do that and change bases? Also, could I drop All trips and then put myself on the overtime list?
