Just signed up here but not allowed to post a new tread.

Was just wondering how hiring conditions are right now regarding Covid/furloughs/layoffs. I don't want to get into a job when that leaves another applicant who really needs it (layed off etc) behind, but going wstir crazy. Don't need it financially, just enjoy the flying and being in the air with you guys(and girls).Preferably cargo but airline, part 135, corporate, air tanker all good. Prefer close home(of course) but open to commuting. Live in Socal now.
Retired last year from a 25 yr gig at an European airline as a 74 capt, cargo and pax. Boeing and Bus (heavy) iron, couple years as a line instructor. Worldwide long haul. Can't wait to fly into seqm, bog and eze again, despite the covid.

Any info appreciated and first beers with bitterballen and stroopwaffels are on me, preferably at the Shabby Frontenac (north beach MIA)!

Times, they are a changing. All your questions are answered in this thread.

I only wish we stayed there - but alas we do not

Hey all, just curious if the "Compass Test" is the Compass Personality Test that is like a Hogan or MMPI, or whether it is the Compass Test that some colleges use as a baseline entry test that includes some reading and math etc. Thanks!

Pretty sure they don't do the Compass test any more.

I'm told there will be one during my interview. Just looking for info on it. Thanks!

It is the one that's similar to the Hogan

Try to Google it. I found some examples on the internet. Joystick, rudder pedals to keep the cross hairs on the dot I think. Math with 6 digit numbers with pen and paper available. And a lot of dumb a...s questions about your personality that will repeat 5 times. All takes about 4 hours on the computer then your eye balls will be ready to explode. I don't think you can really prep for this test.

Give honest answers and stay in middle of the road if you can. Try not to answer “I have never told a lie” or “I like to be around others all the time” or “I prefer to be alone all the time”.

Search for “airline compass testing”. Pilotest dot com is the first that came up and looks like a lot of what we got on our tests last year. There are two sections we got on the interview test that aren’t on the practice test: personality and knowledge.

Knowledge: try and find a practice test for the European ATP written. Personality: try and be consistent and truthful. You’ll be asked: Are you A or B? Do you prefer B or C. So are you C or A? Are you Q or B? A or F? Continues like that for over 200 questions. It will melt your brain.

I wouldn’t worry about the joystick too much. If you have easy access to a computer setup that allows you to practice, great. If not, maybe just an hour in an FTD working on unusual attitudes would be good. On the actual test, they will introduce each axis one at a time, with time to practice each new axis before testing.

If they end up throwing you in a 747 sim, don’t freak out, you won’t be perfect hand flying, just do your best, keep your poise, and demonstrate basic airmanship. Most of us going through cq are a train wreck trying to hand fly it. Again, maybe an hour in any FTD doing basic instrument work might help in the event they throw you in the sim.

Don’t sweat it all too much. I don’t think any of us even finished the math section, but almost all of us got hired. I think the HR part and your interactions in the holding tank are more important than the testing. It’s not a contest: they’ll hire all of your class if you all have a good attitude and they think you’re trainable on the aircraft. Good luck and enjoy.
