Cruising From New York: JFK or EWR?

We are planning to take in the Fall colors from a cruise ship departing New York in October 2016. Alaska flies to both EWR and JFK.

The plan is to fly in about 4 or 5 days before the cruise. We'll also spend the night at the end of the cruise before flying home.

Which airport is better?
Any suggestions as to must-see sights?
I haven't been to New York in probably 20 years! I'm sure a lot has changed.

Thanks.

We did that one a few years ago. Here are some things we liked:
NYC -- pastrami sandwich & cheesecake @ Carnegie Deli and a long walk in Central Park
BOS -- pot roast @ Durgin Park restaurant and a walk around Boston Common & Public Garden
PWM -- lobster @ DiMillo's and a Casco Bay lines excursion to Peaks Island
Halifax -- fish 'n chips and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

We went in September, and that year it was too early for the best leaf colors. Hope October works better for you!

Is your cruise leaving from the cruise port in Bayonne?

Ship leaves from Manhattan. I believe it's on the west side and near the Intrepid.

A friend who was former NYPD said to use JFK. We are flying AS and EWR is much less expensive.
