Getting back to base

Quick question for airline pilots:

When you go on a trip, say you're based in New York and are making a trip to to Miami and then to Dallas, does your trip always end up back at base?

Is there ever an instance where you have to commute back to base to go for a few days break after completing a trip?

FYI - The section you posted in is for those “leaving the career”.

Most airline trips start and end at the “crew base”. If the trip ends elsewhere, you get a paid “deadhead” in the back (with the passengers) back to your base/domicile. If you want to travel somewhere else on scheduled days off, that is usually possible (space available flight benefits)
