As a young person growing up in a suburb of Seattle I took stock of all the neighborhood families in regards to the amount of control they had over their daily lives and level of prosperity. I learned early on that securing financial independence was an important element to a stable and prosperous life and that I aspired the same when I reached adulthood.

Commonly at the time airline pilots in my home town were very well off. Not only did they earn among the highest of salaries but they seemed to have the time off to employ those funds to a great financial advantage and to enjoy their lives better as well. In contrast most everyone else was a wage slave who sold their best days to a heartless employer. Tied to a post they hated living dollar to dollar as time slipped away to a very uncertain future.

Well ..... you most likely know where this is going.... Lets just say that I hold a different vision now of the advantages of a career as an airline pilot and have had to seek elsewhere to reach my goals.

Those of us lucky enough to work for a good airline still enjoy great pay and time off. And, I still think pilots will be in a good negotiating position in the future. 200k/yr is not 300k/yr but it is still a good wage these days. Unless you own your own business, it's hard to make more (and then good luck getting as much time off)
