Personality and attitude are most of the battle.

Yep, and those guys that put in the effort will in the end, succeed. And if they don't end up with one of the top-tier jobs they at least hold their head up and take pride in a job well done.

And, they lived happily ever after. :D

Don't go into flying because of the money

A good interviewer can tell whether a person trully loves aviation or is just doing it as a job to pay the bills. In a sea (as it is) of "qualified" applicants, who do you think will get the job?

Don't go into flying because of the money. Logic dictates that if it is to be considered a "job" that at least you should be able to earn a good return on your investment.

If not then it is a hobby.

You know, The job has its bad points, but there are some good ones too. I do not care how much you make, getting to sleep in on a Monday is awesome.
I see my wife get up every day, go to the office, and then come home with her work. I get physically ill just thinking of doing that for the rest of my life.
Fact is that there are somethings that money can't buy.

FWIW anyone that thinks that you can go in to another career field and make 100K+ and really 130K+ in five years is nuts. Do not compare yourself to a Doctor, Lawyer, or and Executive. Those guys have paid their dues too. Fact is that we all look at the top 1% of every industry and say, "I could do that." Fact is that unless you are Superman or have been in another industry it will take you another 7-10 years min to make what you make at a major airline. That the facts. I looked in to it since I have an MBA. Even with this and management experience the best I could hope for would be 60-70K for a few years until I could prove myself in that company. (I know SkyHigh you are going to compare me to the 1% but the fact is that is no where near the norm.)

I've come to expect nothing but sadness and bitterness from this section of the forum. Everytime I feel down, I look into here and quickly realize how well my life has turned to work out. I never aimed at the regionals, nor did I ever think half a million other pilots would ever leave enough room for a kid like me in a major's cockpit. Pilots are a dime a dozen, now and forever. Selfinduced gunshot wound to the head. Instead of realizing that, we keep producing lemmings that will take the 20K jobs drooling heavily for some quality time in a CRJ pushing buttons and feeding banana's to the guy on the left seat. When they can't trash the airline industry with their kind of slavery, they'll go out and ride GA into the ground for good. This is what's happening now.

For heavens sake - please stop associating accepting a minimum wage job to QOL. Doing that is like trying to bull**** a Bull.

Thanks for this piece of sanity:

You're right, you can't go into any other profession and make 100,000 your first year. My wife, and the hundreds of others at her firm did it in their first year. Oh yeah, you get bonuses in other professions on top of that. Oh yeah, you don't start over at the bottom either.

I like my job a lot. I like money. My QOL is golden. No - I am not a regional FO, and never will be. :D

acl65pilot 08-28-2008 07:20 AM

Yes, but that required a JD which took three more years of school than any pilot is required to have.

acl65pilot 08-28-2008 07:21 AM

Also not all lawyers make 100K.
