There is no question these are very interesting times in which we live. Nobody knows whether the economy has hit bottom and if it has, how fast it will recover. In the meantime, bills have to be paid and everyone has to plan for an uncertain future. If you have any interest or skill outside of flying, you must consider accepting a job in another field. Dreams can be put on hold, but you cannot ignore your family.

Here's a sampling of occupations with the most openings, based on an October 2008 job-vacancy survey:
• Registered nurses

• Software engineers

• Door-to-door salespeople

• Counselors

• Food-preparation workers (including fast food)

So maybe there isn't work at the post office.

But in this plummeting economy, with jobs disappearing across the country at a rate of almost half a million a month, there are still employers in Washington state looking for people — at all different skill levels and pay grades.

WorkSource, the statewide employment database, lists nearly 15,000 jobs on its Web site: from a retail supervisor at Goodwill, a coffee bar barista at the Hyatt to several positions Microsoft posted in the days after it announced major layoffs.

Many job openings are in the health-care and high-tech industries — registered nurses and pharmacists, software engineers and programmers.

I've overheard some of the c**p - some deserved, most undeserved - that they get from some docs and hospital "suits". I'd last about two hours before I drilled one of those turkeys in the teeth! :eek:

I don't know what to believe anymore. I always hear of the Health Care field being seemingly untouchable in a recession. But then some folks come on here saying they are getting laid off in the health care field? I guess it depends on WHERE you live.

I don't think anyone is really recession-proof. Although people still get sick during recessions, unfortunately sick people don't exude cash. Healthcare providers only make money when they get paid, and as unemployment increases so will the uninsured, making healthcare providers more and more dependant on medicaid and programs to fund care for the indigent... just as cash-strapped state and local governments are looking to make cuts to such programs.

Lear, isn't your wife an attorney? How is her business doing? Is her firm hiring?

Yes. She along with 20 other partners/of counsel were terminated yesterday. Unfortunately, her specialty was (is) Commercial Real Estate. Have you seen all of those empty brand new strip malls? She used to zone those and draft lease documents. When the recession hit, her work comprised of "workouts." which is a legal term for how these business owners can get out from under there once proud properties. :(. This is the first time in her firms 80 year history they've had to terminate. (other than performance reasons, etc). 09' is going to be a scary year to say the least.

Really sorry to hear that.

A good friend's wife works as an RN, and her hours were just reduced. Unfortunately that means she will no longer qualify for health insurance at work. There seems to be enough pain to go around for everyone.

Funny, I know almost as many RNs who are no longer in medicine as pilots who are no longer in aviation.

The reasons? Politics, poor work conditions, bad relationships with management, pay etc.

How were you supposed to know? :)
