Default Other Careers - Attorney - Truck Driver

Just a few thoughts, for what they are worth -
Attorney - An infinite amount of rules, often contradictory, any or all of which may or may not be enforced at any given time.

Aviation - A finite number of rules, which are (usually) uniformly enforced.

Truck driver - Drive alone, go around the block/turn back to see a pretty girl/quaint bridge/the old rail line/ . . . Pull over to sleep whenever you want. . .

Aviation (civilian) - Easy turns (always), always have somebody else in the cockpit and a crew to deal with, the public knows who you are and who you work for . . .

Just wanted to get this posted - don't know if there is any interest - I have a Commercial license and instrument rating, then went to law school, practice as a sole practitioner and still drive a truck when I can . . .

There was quite the discussion on here about truck driving at the beginning of 2009. I recall a few people (myself included) were looking into hanging up their headsets for a trucking cap.

I was pretty close to dropping $3k on the community college CDL school in May. The problem was that the class size was 30 students and there were 100+ guys wanting to get into it. Even though I had cash, these guys had been on a year long waiting list already. Sheesh! Professional schools were too expensive as well. It seemed exciting though at the time! I was pumped and ready for the schooling! Got my DOT physical done and everything.

Schools do higher bus drivers off the streets , pay and hours not good , but they get you into a CDL, ( maybe class B) its a stepping stone like general aviation.Something to check into.

Anyone can get a school bus driver job. I am living proof of this. I am 20 and a school bus driver while attending college. I got the job at 18! At that age and this economy I should not be driving a school bus with 80 kids in it theoretically but I am and I actually quite enjoy it. My dad hauled fuel for 30 years and it was quite rewarding. In the summer I drive for the construction company my mom works for and the only reason they were willing to train me for class A was my school bus driving experience. I make $48.00 a day for barely 3 1/2 hours of work. It pays the bills and the extra trips I get on weekends (basketball, swimming, wrestling etc.) help pay for my flight time. It's slow going to get my ratings but I have a deep hatred for fast track schools and nowhere near that kind of money anyway. I get to drive a big vehicle everyday and also fly. It's something for you to look into for sure.

One of my roommates in college drove a schoolbus. It seemed to be a great job except for the getting up *really* early in the morning part.
He worked for a few hours in the morning and then again in the afternoon. He made A LOT more money than I did in my multitude of jobs and he had every weekend off if he wanted, or like you said, made extra money driving to the sporting events. For any of you high school/college age guys and gals out there - look into bus driving for a job and best of luck.

Default yard care business?

Im furloughed and with spring and summer coming up, I have ran some ideas of buying an enclosed trailer, some lawn equipment and headin' out.

The rate around here is $1 per min.....easy to make the same income that the job openings are offering around here..

no landscaping crap, just mow, weed, blow and be gone..

These numbnuts are making 50k a year doing this.......that's 833 hours on a mower...! ouch!

If i cant get employed, i might as well employ myself?

Comments? Anyone do this on the side?

There's a lot of money to be made there... especially if word gets around that you're good. In the off-season, you could do snow removal, tree/limb removal, etc. to bring in additional income.
