You gotta think outside the box and stop working for the man. Be creative and start your own business. Yeah, it takes a little capital but not much sometimes. I saved up xmas money, birthday money, sold a bunch of old crap and used some performance bonuses for a year. Came up with enough money to start my own little business.
Make sure it's something easy to sell, doesn't have a lot of overhead or liability, and is recession proof.
Some easy ideas: DJ for hire or other entertainment service for bars and restaurants (they always need entertainment); learn web design; portable auto mechanic; Buy a nice camera, learn about photoshop and start selling awesome photos to Istock photos; Census jobs.
Just gotta find your niche.

I sell Advocare. Honestly it's not a ton of extra money. A few hundred bucks a month. But I love the discount on products I get for myself. And really, it's not hard to sell when other crew members see you take the products and ask about them. PM me for details

I know this is an old thread, but....
I totally agree with afterburn81. Running your own business is the way forward.
I recommend starting an internet business because all you need is a laptop and a wi-fi connection. Plus, there are so many options. You could run a site about flying, or sell products, give advice etc. It can have low start-up costs. Anyway, that's what I did and it has fitted in really well with my airline job.
