I was an GA inspector from 2009-2013 and very much enjoyed the job. I worked both at a FSDO and HQ. You should also consider REMOTE SITED jobs with either a Regional Office or FAA Headquarters. There are more and more opportunities to work from home and either travel for meetings or participate via video or tele- conferencing. HQ and Regional positions also pay GS-13/14 or pay/performance scale. Flex schedules, weekends and holidays off, all add to the benefits of the job. As a over 12-yr pilot with a major, the pay can't compete, otherwise I'd stay and fly with the FAA (you get a quarterly allowance for pilot currency in the aircraft you oversee). Good luck!

Don't have specific info for you on timeframe, but this may help ease your pain- New budget for this year passed by Congress will permit appx 150+ new hires off the street for 2016. Sorry, I don't lnow when the floodgates will open.
