So even though I'm on the old referral list again, I was advised to apply to the new announcement anyways (not sure why this would be necessary or priority placement). The new announcement requires you are willing to work any duty station (which I'm not). I selected this option anyways but what's the thoughts on this from the group here?

This is totally true. You wouldn't BELIEVE the hoops I'm jumping through for a job at the FSDO. But at the end of the day, set schedule, weekends/nights off, all holidays off, plus pension? Yes, please.

I have a ride coming up for GA ASI position and am wondering if anyone has insight into the content/conduct of the ride. I've heard everything from "it's pass/fail, held to comm/instr PTS standards" to "it's mainly to verify you aren't an idiot and can still fly an airplane and they don't expect you to be proficient"

Step 3 online hasn't changed. You must select "all." I tallked to somebody who said 2 weeks ago it was different, but when he went back, it was still this way.

Question about ASI Job
Hi all, read through the entire thread and had a few questions that I hoped could be answered. I'm looking at transitioning from Active Duty to the FAA and was wondering how far out I should apply. Right now I have 18 months left of service.
Number two, I am hoping for a slot in southern California. Does anyone know if that particular region is hard to get? My family is there and I am really trying to get back there to them.
Third, as far as credentials go, I am a CFI, CFII, MEI, MEII, IGI, AGI with ATP AMEL and Commercial and instrument rotorcraft. Currently typed in BE-200, BE-300, BE-400, MU-300, BE-1900, SJ-30, and S-70. Total time will be just shy of 4000 leaving the army, most of that turbine pic AMEL. I am also an aviation safety officer and have attended the federal course. I currently develop, manage, and implement my units SMS. How competitive am I, in your opinion and is their anything else I should be doing to prepare?
Lastly, the check ride for the job.....where is it conducted (AFW or DAL) for GA. I read that Denver does the 37 sim. Is their an FAA check ride unit or office or do they just grab random guys from the FSDO to do your eval?
Thanks everyone for sharing all your information. I really appreciate it.

Agency desperately needs Helicopter ASI's. You have extremely competitive quals and would be highly desirable. SAN has lots of helo activity. Also LGB, VNY and RAL. Do you want G/A or Air Carrier? Much more G/A opportunities in SoCal. If you apply right now, I guarantee you will be plucked from the pool quickly. Thus I would wait until closer to your separation date. You won't miss your opportunity as the hiring boom has just begun... For G/A you will do the flight check in a PA-44 at DFW area. The new "centralized hiring" process involves an interview via phone or in person at several locations, not necessarily the office you want to work at. Study FAA Advisory Circular 120-92B on SMS. V/R!
