The FAA is hiring Operations Aviation Safety Inspectors with a higher starting salary up from Step 1 to Step 5 of the GS pay scale.

We are offering a $10K relocation allowance for candidates whose residence is 100 miles or more away from the offered duty location. You must sign a Service Agreement and remain in that location for one year.

Aviation Safety Inspectors in the General Aviation Operations (GAO) and Air Carrier Operations (ACO) specialties apply knowledge and skills typically acquired as airmen (pilots, navigators, flight instructors, etc.) to develop and administer regulations and safety standards pertaining to the operation of aircraft.

The timeline differs. Its the government. My process took from start to finish 9.5-10 months. Granted there was the government shutdown that delayed me by a month. Your time my vary. After being referred you still gotta be selected, scheduled for an interview, pre-employment checkride and have an start date. So, be patient. You can interview, be hired, go thru training and finish IOE with a regional faster than going thru the FAA hiring process. The pay is good and right now the agency is hurting for ASI's BAD. If you're looking for stability and growth, this place isn't bad. Good Luck.

For me every step in the process took about a month. After I was referred, about one month later I got the call to interview. That interview was scheduled 3-4 weeks out. It took about another 3-4 weeks after that for me to get a tentative offer, and then just over a month for my flight check to be scheduled. After the flight check, I was given a firm offer within 2 days with a choice of start dates. I elected to give my previous employer 1 month notice. So from referred to sitting down at my desk at the FSDO, it was somewhere in the 4-5 month range. For what it’s worth, I’m told that I got pretty lucky, so I’m guessing 6+ months isn’t unusual either.

EDIT: for what it’s worth turns out I still had the emails so I’ll share my specific timeline:

9/13/17: Referred
9/25/17: Called to schedule interview
10/4/17: Interview
10/20/17: Tentative job offer
11/1/17: Called to schedule flight check
12/11/17: Flight check
12/12/17: Firm job offer
1/22/18: Scheduled first day (canceled due to shutdown)
1/29/18: First day at FSDO

I have an interview in Den on Dec 4th for Air carrier 1825 fg11 at PHX CMO. I’ve been at Skywest for 12 years, and I need a change. What can I expect after the interview? If offered a job, what is a typical day like? Is there an opportunity to work from home? How much time will be in the jumpseat / traveling? How quickly can you earn promotions? Thanks for your time.

Once you start, be prepared to SLOW DOWN. Everything in the first year or so will seem to take longer than necessary. Take a deep breath and remind yourself of these two things:

1) The check keeps coming every two weeks no matter how much work occurred; and
2) I have weekends and holidays OFF.

As an air carrier ASI, the promotions will come. After you’re fully qualified, an average week might be a blend of:

-desk work reviewing manuals, OpSpecs, new program requests, etc.
-simulator time observing training/checks
-Jumpseat observations
-other surveillance or investigation activities

It’s a good career. Not a glamorous one, but good...especially for family life.

One thing I’d add here is try not to judge the job based on the first year. You’re going to spend most of that year in some form of training. Some of the training is pretty good, but a lot of it is awful. Just smile and nod. Be prepared for a lot of “cooperate to graduate,” because a lot of things are just going to make you scratch your head because they make ZERO sense. Again, smile and nod.

Once you finish training and actually get to work, it’s a great job. But I know of multiple guys who quit during training just because they thought the job itself was going to be like the training process - it’s not. So my advice is, try not to get too frustrated that first year, because it does get much better once you’re done with the schoolhouse.
