Go Into Real Estate!
Some of the posters here "Get it," Others not so much.My experiences might help. So heres my story of Flying and leaving the profession.
So consider this, I started flying when I was 18. And by the time I was 25 had my COMM ASEL, AMEL, ASES, Glider, CFI,CFII,CFIG. I also had my Tail wheel, Complex, High Performance and Spin endorsements. I was trained in Mountain flying and Basic aerobatics. I also was an avionics technician since I turned 20 and was installing GNS 530's, MX20, and other advanced avionics. The only thing I couldn’t install was King HSI's and Autopilots.
I also was debt free because I lived in a house with 5 other dudes, had no car payment, didn't drink and worked full time. I also lived in a tent at one point to pay for my AMEL and glider ratings.
Let's just say I knew what I was doing and was responsible with some credibility......Just a little.
So when I became a flight instructor I knew it was a low paying job with bull **** but I was OK with it. My bull **** level was pretty high. When I announced that I wanted to be a Commercial Pilot my grandmother, mother and brother had an intervention and told me if I wanted to do something stupid I should just be gay like my Uncle. How many of you got told that?
I really didn’t expect the abject stupidity and greed present in Aviation.
So I worked for National Pilot Academy for the span of 3 months. In that time I lost 7,500 which I had set forward to them for my MEI. I also lost a $1,500 paycheck when I finished my only student there. How did this happen? Easy, I reported the Assistant Chief pilots drinking buddy to the Chief Pilot. I disagreed with him having his student who just got his private pilot’s license fly him and his 18 pack of Miller High Life 8 NM away. They also had 6 gallons total in the plane and the fuel truck was in front of him asking to put more fuel in. From what we gather they flew there, flew back and dead sticked it in.
Next flight school (Northern Nevada Aviation) I had all my students reassigned and no new students added because I wouldn’t sleep with the office manager. When I brought it to the owners attention he only said “That’s your Problem.” Turns out she was later fired for stealing. I would say “I told you so” but the damage was already done.
Next flight school was in Phoenix. I was offered the job in August 2008 and Started in September 01, 2008. Three days later I was laid off. Interestingly the school went defunct and was sold. You can probably figure out which one it is.
Did I mention that I got married the month before?
So I spent 10 months looking for work flying in Phoenix. With the reasons why I was not hirable ranging from me being overqualified to not having enough “Valley Experience” or me having substandard training and if I spent $10,000 for the wonder child pilot program I might have a job.
At this point I said **** THIS and went back to the drawing board. At which point I moved back to Reno and got my Real Estate license. So now I do Commercial Real Estate for Coldwell Banker Commercial with my specialty being the Midtown District and Multi-Family’s. I also own an 8 unit apartment complex that I live in. Fundamentally I am now happy in life. I have a loving wife, awesome coworkers, a job that I can respect. It took me a while to get over changing my career, with a lot of feelings of regret and failure. But in the end I realized that I’m in a better place. I haven’t flown since December before last. And except for today had no desire to.
I realized several things from my experiences.
1)If you want a better life for your family, Leave. If you’re willing to devote half the energy you did to aviation you will have a good career in business.
2)Learn about money. Start with the Rich Dad series and read every investing handbook you can. I would start with the Trump Guide to investing in Real Estate.
3)If you want to keep flying then invest in Real Estate. You can put 3.45% down with an FHA or USDA loan on a 4 plex which would bring in an extra $19,000. Suddenly that $50,000 a year regional job just got a lot more tolerable. Did I mention that you can also write off the building against the income from your Regional Job. I.E you get a good sized return on your tax’s.
4)Being Stupid with your money is incredibly easy, Being financially smart takes time and effort.
Hope this Helps,

About the 4 tips... Here are my (5) tips from my experience in the business world:
I realized several things from my experiences.
1)If you want a suburbanite apple pie soul draining existence, work in an office environment. If you KNOW THE RIGHT PEOPLE, or have the RIGHT LAST NAME OR DEMOGRAPHIC you will have a good career in business.
2)Don't treat real estate as an investment. Treat it as a place to live. Trust me, this is what got us into trouble in the first place. (I work for a real estate company)
3)If you want to keep flying then STAY FLEXIBLE. Don't limit yourself to one place to live early on in your career. This job involves travel. Any idiot knows that. If you don't like traveling a lot, then go work in a 9-5 somewhere. If travel is not your thing, and you like aviation still, then find a 150 somewhere and have a blast. SkyHigh can probably help you out in that department.
4)Being Stupid with your money is incredibly easy, Being financially smart takes time and effort. (This advice is universal) I'll add to it: Don't go overboard with loans on any kind of schooling. AT MINIMUM, If you don't expect annual salary over the next 10 years to average the same amount as your total cost of schooling, then you need to find a cheaper route, or work while you go to school.
5)ENJOY what you do. Or at least work with people that like you, and that you also like. Treating a job as something that you MUST do will ensure that it will always remain a JOB. I don't think any amount of stability or money can make you happy if you are stressed out, bored, or miserable about your job, or the people you work for or with. Believe me - I know personally the CEO's 30 yr old son. He has EVERYTHING in the world, and is miserable, depressed, and a substance abuser. Proof that all expenses paid, millions of dollars, private jets, none of that can make you happy if it isn't "earned". Most relationships in his life are based on tit for tat, and he yearns for real friends or a girlfriend that likes him for something other than money.

Awesome post
I too am in real estate and have experienced the same advantages. It is one thing to be an employee in business and yet another to be a small business owner. In case those here need direction it is much better to be the owner.
In regards to the self help business books most of them are full of craziness but they are still good to read. If you only take away one good idea from each one you are still better off. Read them all with a grain of salt and use what you can from them. Your life will be the better for it.
