Want to leave but don't know how.
Fellow pilots,
I've been contemplating for years about leaving this career mainly for the money. I want start a family and I can't support them and save for retirement on 35k/yr. I don't want to spend money or time to go back to school. I just can't think of anything else I'd be good at or would enjoy doing. All I've ever wanted to do is fly for an airline. I love the job but I feel like it's time to grow up, put my big boy pants on and get a real job.
I want to leave but don't know how or what I should do with my life. Any thoughts? I thought maybe a truck driver.

From what little I could gleam from your post it sounds like its a money issue. If you enjoy flying that much, you'll probably want to stay in the field of aviation. Without knowing age, degree or other interest it's kinda hard to point you in a direction outside of aviation that might interest you. LEO, lawyer, or train engineer come to mind off the top of my head.

A friend of mine worked in OPS FA scheduling at a major when he got his dispatcher rating, and moved on to a charter. The guy makes $90K/year.
Look into it and see what the chances are. Maybe one of the charters would hire you sooner since you have been a pilot. They have to be hiring though.

If flying is all you've ever wanted to do you might want to hang in there a bit. maybe things will get better with the upswing in hiring and you can land a gig with more money (if you're applying and willing to relocate).

Degree: Aviation
Interests: Other than aviation...????
I applied for ATC recently. Didn't even get an interview. ATC would have been something I think I would have enjoyed.

I am not sure whether it has been addressed here before, but how about Flight Dispatcher? You may have to start at a regional though, which is pretty low pay. From there you can move to a major or charter like Atlas.

If you're contemplating the dispatcher route, 2 years in a 121 cockpit qualifies you to take the practical test for the cert. I believe the question bank for the written is the same as the ATP.
Speaking for myself, even though I'm planning a long career in the cockpit, I'll be adding that cert to my certificate as soon as I'm qualified. Never hurts to diversify your skill set.

Dispatcher
I thought that dispatchers did not earn much either? My two bits are to take the civil service test and join the post office if I were you. Postal workers in my town make 72K plus full ride retirement.
Any government job would be a good choice. The challenge is that employers don't like pilots in the outside world. It is difficult for them to identify with you since they think you are a rich playboy pilot who does not know how to work. (They may have a point.)
Going back to college is a good idea. You could train for the medical field. Work to live don't live to work.

They seemed to have just come out from under the sequestration hiring freeze and are now ready to take people with NO prior experience (or even aviation experience). If still interested - maybe you should look into applying again.

This recent opening of the ATC jobs is making me skeptical of what they're looking for. I know of several people (my wife included) that have applied that had more than met the prerequisites listed and were given the "no thanks" after taking the biographical test or whatever it's called.
