Like they article says, they were looking for someone, not doing general screening.

The fact that's it's in the airport means they have more leeway. Don't like it? Stay out of the airport.

For those you who may not be familiar with NMuir, he is a troll with just enough knowledge of aviation to push our buttons. He throws out inflammatory statements and refuses to support them with any relevant facts. When you supply any contradictory evidence, he responds with this: https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/appeal-to-authority

He never is able to engage past basic talking points and lacks any real world experience to support his posts. He is the uninformed yet opinionated facebook "friend," the 17-year-old kid who just discovered Che Guevara, nothing more than a mere fart in the wind.

Please elaborate on your understanding of law involving ID and leeway at airports.

Would this apply to perhaps stopping every car on a highway, as there might be an undocumented person in a car? How about stopping everyone walking down the street to check ID, as there were reports of undocumented people roaming the city.

I'm just curious about where folks here draw the line.

I actually picture a basement-dwelling millennial who happened upon a libertarian website one day and has been an expert on constitutional law, the evils of unions and the power of unbridled free markets ever since.

I'm not aware of specific case law regarding CBP officers checking everyone's ID on a domestic flight, however the Supreme Court has deemed some searches to be "reasonable" and therefore not a violation of the 4th amendment. JFK is within 100 miles of a US border and CBP has some pretty broad latitude within that zone to search people and vehicles. The CBP would probably use US v Martin-Fuentes (1976) as their legal justification for the search. That case involved an internal border patrol checkpoint. Much of the legal reasoning the SCOTUS applied in that case could be used in this case.

I'd keep right on walking.

Without a warrant or probable cause, they won't touch you-or even stand in your way.

This whole stunt was just drama.
