Bigly Huuuuuuge idiocracy has begun. It didn't take spandex to cause that domino drop to start the process; Kardashians, Selfies, blogs, Facebook and Trump began that process.

In exchange for pass travel benefits, those using them are expected to follow the rules, (which if anyones has read them are pretty lax). Who cares if they disagree?

The amount of outrage this generated (which will be gone in 3 days) pretty much shows why Twitter is a failing company and quite frankly it's a good ad for how much fake news drives the masses towards utter stupidity.

I'm curious. How is this fake news. It's a factual account of a real event that took place. How is that fake? Is it newsworthy? No. But that doesn't make it fake.

I think people are inferring that it is misleading news, meant to cause you to believe something about United that isn't true, therefore "fake".

Flying through DEN my wife was told she couldn't sit in first with her "open toe" shoes (not flipflops). She went to that Croc shoe store and had to buy some shoes with closed toes. I'm out 40$ for a pair of ugly rubber shoes, guess it didn't make twitter?

The point of having non rev dress code rules is to protect the brand image. In an effort to "protect the brand" the gate agent created a media storm that made United look bad.
Maybe United should clarify the non rev dress code rules more, provide better employee training on the issue, and more importantly instill the importance of not making a mountain out of a mole hill even if a 10 year old girl is not adhering to an internal policy.
It reminds me of a 5am wide body flight out of IAH to EWR with about 10 passengers on board. As a pilot, I was told I could move to an economy plus seat. Soon, two other people decided to move to the empty economy plus section and a flight attendant came running from the back to tell them that she could be fired for letting passengers sit in that zone who didn't pay for it. Forrest through the trees.
