Very sad indeed. I don't want to sound like a Monday morning QB, but I was surprise the CA landed and taxiing to the gate, not sure that would have made a difference, but I would have considered stopping on the taxiway to get medical treatment started immediately. But who knows, maybe that was the fastest way to get the paramedics to him.

I've had the unfortunate experience of making a medical emergency landing in ABQ. Tracon told us our gate, and tower cleared us to the gate before landing. Every plane on the airport stopped, and going directly into the gate was much faster than setting up air stairs. The gates are just off the runway. 30 second taxi.

Going to the gate is almost always the fastest way to get medical treatment for someone onboard. There are so many issues with stopping on a taxiway waiting for medical personal that it should be the option of last resort.

Makes sense. On my side of the airport we ONLY use stairs and the taxi route is always convoluted. Many times requiring a shut down and tow in.

Prayers for the family... regardless of the schematics, a death is never easy.

Not to mention the paramedics could pre-stage, to an extent, in the jetway. Hook up the jetway and then Run right on.

From your comment I have to assume you are not a pilot or even a flight attendant. The only way to get outside medical help into the airplane is via stairs, jetway or some other ramp raised up to the door of the airplane.

The best and fastest way to get him help was to declare a medical emergency and then get to the first open gate where the help will be waiting. Additionally all US airplanes have a very extensive medical kit and AED on board.

Despite what you may think the crews of most US Airlines are extremely well trained for this sort of thing and most US airports have full time EMT staff.

Agreed. Most all Part 139 airports (especially international) have AARF staffed with dual qualified firefighters/paramedics on duty 24/7 and must meet the time response required under the regulations.

Sad day for all involved.
