Can you imagine something like that flying in America without MSNBC or VOX chiming in concurrently with legal suits? Not arguing one method or another, I like some of the labor laws in the states (compare our salaries to Asian carriers,) just pointing out a huge reason for difference in customer service.
For some reason people keep making this silly statement that can't be any further from the truth..., the labour laws in Japan are extremely employee sided, it is virtually impossible to fire an employee in Japan, also it is very unionized.

Your assesment is absolutely incorrect...., although it is true that you don't see many overweight flight attendants in Japan but it is because you simply don't see many overweight people in Japan period.

In terms of service......, well, let me put it this way, If my final flight arrives in Narita after the last ANA flight is gone, I just take the next mornig flight.

I am the same way. I will avoid UAL at all costs unless there is a dire emergency that I have to get home right now. When you get dirty looks for asking for a coke while sitting in business, you know the service sucks.

European carriers are extremely unionized as well. I enjoy traveling on European carriers there is a service mentality. American carriers do not have a service mentality.

European Legacies are.

Euro LCC employees usually work on a staffing 'agency' contract.

US3 service sucks. It could be improved if high seniority cat ranchers didn't live on international routes.

I just rode a United 777 out of NRT. The F/A's were all great also Asian and NRT based. The aircraft was brand new, economy + seating was comfy, dinner was good and breakfast unrecognizable. Overall positive.
