Swap board and Cap questions
All,
Doing my mid contract survey for DL, and they had a few questions that made me want some “been there done that” data... I just want to make sure I consider possible ramifications b4 I put down my response.
Anyone have the ability to swap/drop trips to guys NOT in your base? And is it at a lower priority?
I think Northwest used to have a cap on hours flown at straight pay, others still have that? Same question for straight pay pickup or picking up from swap board, any caps?
Thanks

Skywest people can trade or pickup out of base. No real limitations, other than 117. Getting there is on you off course.
Now if you want to split a trip at an outstation, they will only approve that with both pilots on the phone, at the gate.

AA - you can pick up out of base but it is a last minute/day before type of thing. You cannot trade with an out of base pilot, unfortunately, nor can you just bid more than a day ahead for an out of base sequence. It has to be an open trip for the next day, offered to in base pickup, then out of base, then reserve.
It’s only worthwhile if you are just sitting around with nothing going on. And you need to be able to get to the out of base trip in time. I live in PHX but I’m based in JFK. Sometimes a 757 trip will come up in PHX and I can put in for it but it’s rare that the stars align with me being interested and available and a trip being open. Trading out of base would be great but the union seems to be against it.

SWA is unlimited in that respect. Pick up, trade, etc in or out of base pilot to pilot is unlimited. Open time gives preference to in base pilots, but that is it. Company swaps using a program called ELITT is in base only. Trips can be split between two pilots electronically.
The upside of this plus being a single fleet is that there are a ton of ways to skin the cat every month and if you commute, you aren’t locked in to one base. There are a few downsides and minor annoyances as well, but they are just that.
