Garmin Hacked

Just wanted to open this up for discussion. It’s not hard to see the possibility of unmanned aircraft being pirated by some dude in his dorm room to pay off his student loans. Twitter has been hacked. Garmin. The US military. I’m not sure it will ever be possible to completely prevent hackers from cracking the code. How will unmanned flight ever be possible?

For this reason it will never happen. Not on a mass scale anyway.

I wouldn't say never, but hacking, malicious/unauthorized access are serious roadblocks, among others.

There's a tradeoff... I can't envision a truly autonomous airliner, they cannot even conceive how to make a machine which can think and exercise judgement like a human. Therefore you need a ground control link as a backup, and that's an obvious vulnerability.

Maybe once AI truly becomes a “real” thing, but I think our grandkids will be pushing up daisies at about the same time, so I’m not losing too much sleep over the prospect.

Sorry, meant to say “loosing” but the darned spellcheck finally kicked in.

A truly autonomous plane would have the AI to complete a flight without an internet connection. Once that happens, I would think the security of the flight systems would be similar to how it is today.

Agreed, and I think this will probably happen in our lifetimes. The "fly from the ground in an emergency" scenario makes no sense for a variety of reasons. It's fully autonomous AI or nothing for airplanes, I think.

Anyone following GPT-3 AI that Musk is letting select people play around with should be more of a wake up call to many sectors of the economy. Advertising, copy writing in general, lawyering...this are going to go away much faster than most want to admit.

It has no human judgement, and therefore won't put many people out of work. Might allow people to be more productive, eliminating some jobs, but won't replace people.

The tech visionaries have cooked up a lot of neat stuff, but they have universally and consistently waaaay overestimated the potential of AI, and the challenges associated with developing it.

Can a human build a machine that can perform the cognitive functions of an ant? Sure.

Can an ant build a machine that can perform the cognitive functions of an ant? Nope.
