Thumbs up Anyone commute from San Antonio?

I'm wrapping up my AF career and looking into future options. I plan to apply to every major I can, but AA/SW/UN would be my top choices due to Texas hubs. My wife and I are from San Antonio and would love to move back, but I also want to avoid commuting if I can. To those that live in SA, how reasonable is it to commute to DFW/DAL/HOU/IAH?

No. Nobody commutes from San Antonio.....

Seriously. It’s a tough commute anywhere. Every time I’ve done SAT to anywhere there’s been a Jumpseat rider. If you want to stay there get hired by SW or UAL and drive to Houston.

It’s a fairly easy commute at FDX. AUS is a good backup too, especially if you live on the N/NE side of town.

AUS has way less pilots commuting compared to SA. The only problem with driving up to AUS is that I35 can be a complete disaster, or it might be fine. It is definitely a wildcard. There are no efficient back roads or state highways either so if there is a major accident, construction, or just normal congestion due to the massive amount of people moving to central Texas, then you will be completely hosed.

If you’re going to commute, commute at FDX. Seriously. I’m sure you have friends from big blue doing exactly that. Ask them.

I know this is a “duh” statement but why put yourself through all that if you have to move anyway? Get the job and move to the hub and enjoy all the extra time and flexibility it affords. Use your days off to take the wife to San Antonio to get your fix in there for whatever reason draws you there whenever you want.

Can’t speak for intra-Texas commuters much. I have heard of UA guys driving to IAH more often than flying. The drive isn’t a big deal if you’re only doing it 3 times a month.

I commute DTW and JFK and I strongly recommend being in a situation where AUS is an easy drive. I live in between the two where I’m about a 30-40 minute drive to either. Consider New Braunfels, San Marcos or Wimberley. Three years of commuting so far and I’ve only once missed a flight home - thanks in part to having two options.

A few DL guys live in Boerne and end up driving an hour and a half to AUS to take a 3.5 hour flight to JFK. Not really an ideal commute if you ask me.

That being said I enjoy where I live and it’s easily worth putting up with the commute.

I live in New Braunfels and work for UPS... I did the pax carrier commute for 10 years outta AUS and SAT... it’s doable, but, not without its share of headache. I found ORD to be easier to get to than IAH... that drive to HOU/IAH got old real quick..

I highly recommend you look at UPS/FEDEX... commercial tickets and/or guaranteed booked jumpseats have added years to my life.

This is exactly my plan when I go part time mil in a couple years. At least until I get hired on at a major and get domiciled out of DFW/DAL. Following!

I also live between SAT and AUS but usually try to commute from SAT to DFW. The employee lot is really convenient at SAT. It’s been hit or miss for me. I’ve had to drive some of the time but that’s mostly because I see the loads look terrible (due to holidays or cancellations) and decide to sleep in and drive instead of worry about flying.

For reference on AA it’s pretty normal for all 10ish flights to have 10+ nonrevs listed. Granted I’m at a regional so I’m way down the list. I haven’t resorted to SWA to DAL yet though that is an option. If I was based in Houston I’d probably default to driving.
