Default Question about flight interns jump seating

I am currently applying for an internship at AA and was informed that they just, in early Jan., cut-out all jump seating privileges to interns. The FAA told them they don't want college students in the cockpits. The intern coordinator informed me that this was for the Southwest region. A couple of weeks later a friend of mine got an internship at Airtran and was told he could expect jump seating privileges. So why would they just cut it for the SW region and, if true, could i expect it to return to normal before the Fall? Any help is appreciated.

Nothing personal, but I don't feel you belong there also.
Interns have no business being in the cockpit.

I don't sit at your desk all day.
You are not a professional pilot and have no business there.
Its already crowded and there is little room for 2 pilots.

Our Flight Attendants are not allowed to sit on the Jump seat.
I certainly feel they have more reason to be there than you.

This of course is all negated if you are young cute female
and have a hot body.

Yes, I agree. If you are hot you can ride in the jumpseat all day long!!!

I haven't heard anything about this. Why don't you ask AA. First lesson in the business, don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see.

You must bow down before the all powerful AA pilot. You are not worthy of my attention and wisdom. I am the pinnacle of human evolution and you are but a mere intern.

It is truly amazing,
Same attitude, different day

PS I'm guessing that if you wanted to sit at his (or her with the hot body) desk for a while no one would stop you.

This opinion would probably be in the minority. When I interned at Northwest I was always welcomed on the flight deck ... from the DC-9 to the B742F. Northwest has a great internship with good benefits. I would look into it. PM me if you want more info js081285. My internship was the most educational semester of my college career.

They work at the Flight Academy in numerous positions. From scheduling at Eagle to Tech Pubs office at mainline AA.

They work for a semester and receive college credit. They are also allowed to sit on the umpseat of AA aircraft and see the opreation.

I had one try to bump me off the jumpseat a year ago to FLL from DFW.

I was told the jumpseat was taken, I checked the non-rev list and saw the jumpseat with a wierd code by his name. I asked the agent to call him and see who was more senior.

He approached me, and I said hello my name is_____, based _____, and my sen is_______. He reponded with I am an intern. I requested the jumpseat yesterday...Sorry to bump you off. I thought he was kidding.

He wasn't. Anyway after an introduction to the word of jumpseating and the pecking order all was "good in the world" again.

AA

Mine was with Trans World Express. On a ferry flight to JFK I got a little stick time on the Dash-7.....Sweet!!

Not uptight, just pointing out the incredibly self centered view of the world you all seem to have. Most of the interns I've come across were eager, interested and professional. I'd agree that the -80 cockpit is a little tight with three but even there you have a great opportunity to educate a future collegue on how the industry works and how things at your company work. Duty rigs, trip rigs, minimum guarantees and such at the regional level would raise everyones QOL. When else are you going to have a captive audience with a pilot (or future pilot) of the regional arena. If AA pilots would spend more time trying to build bridges and educate an less time telling everyone else how wonderful they are, you might end up with a real union and some respect from the rest of the industry. There is nothing special about me, I'm just another guy screaming around the sky in a metal tube. Interns are welcome on my flight deck anytime.

All the interns at AA are required to have a commerical license. Therefore, they believe that having interns jumpseat is an increase in safety. Flight attendents don't have flight training but interns do so why not let them go up front? Spotting traffic, listen over the radio, and experiencing what a 121 flight is like is extremely benefical to the intern. I guess I was in the last AA group of interns that had the privileges and it's sad that they won't get this benefit anymore. Does anyone know if the other majors also lost this for their interns?
