Captain's Atlas
In the olden days I used to carry the captain's atlas that was sold at the Stopover Store with me as I went around the world...it was always useful when I'd look down in some weird place and wonder what city I was looking at or something. It's since been destroyed... Anyone have any good leads on where to find something similar, either hard copy or a good app for the iPad or something? Thanks for any replies.

Depending on connectivity and/or GPS position the ‘duty’ IPad covers the role of the ‘Captains Atlas’ well enough. At least the way I see it.
One can usually change the underlying map to a VFR presentation that shows stuff, like where you want to go for the next elk hunt, whatever. Google maps or Earth may be options too.

There also used to be a Captain's Guide which also had some interesting trivia, AM radio stations, etc. It was white and blue if I remember right.
I think the product is obsolete since you can pull the same information easily from the internet. There's also more interesting stuff to look at than just what was in the Captain's Guide.
If you're over water a bunch, here's a website for finding shipwrecks:
Wreck Finder - Maps & GPS Location Coordinates - Shipwreck World
This keeps me entertained (meaning engaged) on oceanic legs.
Also, here's a Smithsonian Article about a nice app that I have called Flyover Country. It basically maps geological points of interest near a great-circle route between two points:

Honestly, I just use Google Earth now. I haven't opened the Flyover App in a while.
Hope this helps.

This. Download the regions you need for offline use. It’s very detailed, includes hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. It even gives driving/walking directions offline. Save landmarks for quick locating.
