Fat Shaming While Flying

I think I'm going to stop eating salads effective immediately.

A woman fat-shamed other passengers, calling them “two big pigs,” when she demanded to be moved on a United Airlines flight, as seen in a viral video.

Norma Rodgers shared the video on social media of her fellow passenger demanding to be moved from her middle seat on United flight 1583 from Las Vegas to Newark Airport in New Jersey on Jan. 2.

“Oh my goodness, I don’t know how I’m gonna do this the next four hours,” the woman, who was on the phone, can be heard saying aloud. “This is just impossible because they’re squishing me. It’s just unbelievable.”

“I’m stuck, but at least they’ll keep me warm.”

“B---h please, okay,” said Rodgers, who was sitting next to her and evidently the target of the rude flier’s tirade.

The woman hangs up her phone, but her complaining does not end.

“Find me a window. Get me out of here,” the woman demanded to a flight attendant, who said they would try to find her another seat.

“I can’t do this,” said the woman. “I can’t breathe, I’m so squished.”

Other passengers make comments to the woman, seemingly telling her to stop, but the woman becomes defensive.

“I eat salads, okay?” she tells the planeful of incredulous fliers.
Rodgers herself then asked a flight attendant to have the woman moved.

“Excuse me, can you find her another seat? Because I will not be verbally abused by this b---h or anyone else,” said Rodgers to a flight attendant. “I will not be verbally abused by anybody. I’m not tolerating it.”

“I can’t sit here because they’re both so big on left and right. I can’t — I can’t even sit here,” the woman continued.

The flight attendant asks the woman if she would like to stand in the back and try to find a new seat, and the woman can’t get up from her seat fast enough.

“Yes, please, yes, please,” she said.

The woman reaffirmed her eating habits to other passengers as she got up from her seat, boasting, “I eat salad.”

“What you’re doing is so terrible, you should be ashamed of yourself,” someone shouted at the woman as she got up from her seat.

“I’m not politically correct,” the woman said to the other passenger. “Why don’t you sit between those two big pigs?”

“B---h, kiss my fat a--, okay?” yelled Rodgers at the woman as she was moving to the back. Rodgers, who is a United platinum member as she said in the video, asked to speak to a supervisor as she has never had an incident like this occur and she travels frequently for work.

Rodgers said in a separate post that she started taping “because of the language being used,” and does not show “the initial verbal name-calling and abuse.”

In her initial post, Rodgers said another passenger requested to have the woman removed from the flight. Shortly after she stopped filming, Rodgers said the woman was removed.

United responded with a statement to the Daily News:
“United flight attendants care about the safety and well being of all of our customers which is why they acted quickly to find a different seat for the disruptive customer. When it became clear that this passenger’s behavior was likely to be problematic on this flight, she was provided alternate travel arrangements first thing the next morning.”

In another post, Rodgers said the situation was handled “professionally and calmly,” and thanked other passengers who came to her defense.

Rodgers said in a post that she wears her “heart on her sleeve” but “will absolutely not tolerate verbal or physical abuse” from anyone.

Looks like yet another airline passenger forgot to take their anti crazy pills before flying.

I do agree if you can’t fit in a seats dimensions you need to buy two.

That woman isn’t even that big. She’s obviously not a small waisted person.....but I’d hardly say she needed 2 seats.

If you can't fit between the armrests without touching me then you need to buy two or a first class seat.

I don’t know how flight attendants get through a day.

This stuff gets worse every year.

Did you see her picture? I’m gonna say she probably can fit without touching the person next to her. There are definitely some huge people out there flying, and she doesn’t look like one of them.

What’s interesting is that a week ago, you basically wrote something that echoes the sentiment I am ATTEMPTING to convey.

Congrats on the growth but there's not a mainline airframe that I hate riding on more than the 737. The tube is so small that a window seat guarantees your spine in a C position while you try to not get intimate with anyone over 90 lbs in the middle row..

There is no doubt that B aircraft are shrinking while the population is growing. B and even A NB seats are really only designed to accommodate 50% or less of the general population. It sucks for wide people but I, or anyone else, shouldn't have to suffer. Your ticket (not you directly but in general) gets you space in YOUR seat and not in MINE.

FWIW: An E175 is far more comfortable than a B737 in my opinion (UA colors for both).

News flash Mac.......

The E175 is more comfortable in United colors because of scope. It’s a 88 seat airplane that is limited to 76 seats by UAL scope. You are welcome. And yes the 737 with slim line seats SUCKS!

The scope has nothing to do with it. The fuselage of the window seats in the E are far more comfortable and provide a more upright body position than a 73. Not to mention the lack of a center seat in the entire airplane. I think the airframe should be flown by UA seniority list but we can blame DAL for that one. Yes, the 73 sucks in every way possible for a passenger. It's a horrific, antique airframe that should be put to pasteur with the Mad Dog and the 72.
