Which airline will Southwest merge/purchase?

If they want maximum fleet diversity, NK. If they want cultural continuity and some fleet diversity, AS.
JB just doesn't feel right for some reason, which I can't articulate.
F9 and Sunny are probably too small to bother with, especially Sunny. If they need 30 73's in a hurry I bet they can get a smokin' deal on some freshly-certified Max.

If they were looking for both fleet diversity and to simultaneously eliminate a competitor, wouldn't JetBlue be the obvious choice?
JetBlue has Airbus 320s and 220s on order. And a similar demographic of passengers. The A220 seems like a potential fit for the future of Southwests fleet so long as they can get JetBlue to absorb the costs associated with a new fleet type before they buy JB.
Otherwise, I'd guess Southwest looks into Frontier or Spirit to get Airbus and eliminate a lower cost competitor

One thing the outsiders looking in have to understand is that senior SWA management is very, VERY resistant to change though.

I just can’t fathom SWA management and the BOD not taking a HARD look at diversifying the fleet no matter when the MAX comes back.
Seriously, think about the implications of another crash(es) once the MAX comes back. The sensationalist media will bury the type even if it’s not a result of MCAS and then SWA and its employees will be royally screwed.
The single fleet type has served the airline well but it’s time to grow up and stop being so close-minded.

They won’t look at diversifying just for the sake of it. They will do it because it’s something the max can’t do. Whether it be serve new markets or better CaSM’s. I don’t see a merger. This hiccup will be a footnote in history 20 years from now and southwest will be retiring their first max.
