Default United or Hawaiian (UAL vs HAL) pro/cons

Looking for advice, thoughts, perspectives to cover all basis...thanks in advance!

- QoL is priority
- hoping to limit time away from home with young kids/special needs (HAL 717 inter-island is appealing)
- 1st year HAL pay is NOT a concern (mil retirement, wife works)
- we have a home on Oahu and plan to move there for the next 5-8 years minimum
- we family on island but cannot say we could live anywhere forever
- we like the option of more domiciles, faster growth/movement (UAL), but why start off commuting to/from LAX-HNL?
-- how fast can you hold a 73 or 78 line from LAX with RONs at HNL?
-- I guess this is a commute now or later issue if we decide to move back to the mainland. Lol
- possible merger concerns? - I read the SWA/HAL thread
- not interested in SWA to have wide body option later
- any Pro/Cons for profit sharing, family/travel benefits?

Hmmm if you’re considered local/have a house/have family here; I think you would prefer Hawaiian. Otherwise anywhere else.

We have people hired here going to United. Don’t see many ex-United new hires. Retirements alone mean you will barely move here, UA soon 500/yr.

Personally, I’d do United and commute.

Noting better than leaving the house, and being in the crew room within 20 to 30 minutes. The bonus is always against the traffic in both directions too.

Do you have a CJO at either or both? If not, probably the one that calls will be the best.

If he's retired mil, he'll probably have a choice although HAL can be kind of funny about who they hire. Although living (owning a home) on the island is a huge plus for HAL... they filter apps by zipcode.

Pilot's leave Hawaiian for United, you never see people leaving United for Hawaiian. That should answer your question. Aloha.

Mostly, if not all commuters, or those that don't want to live in Hawaii.. which is completely understandable..

Also move up the seniority list faster at United...

Had, from what I can tell, 1 pilot leave this past vacancy...

United pros

Way faster career progression at United with way better pay and work rules.

Hawaiian pros

Commuting sucks. If you can afford it and like the culture, Hawaii is a great place to live.

Depends on your age. If you are 35 now and are going to live on the island for the next 5-8 years of your next 30 years then move back to mainland, then UAL for sure. If you only have 10 years left, HAL. 25 years left, UAL. 20 years left, not as easy of a decision but UAL if you leave the island after 5 years, HAL if you live in Oahu for 10 years of the 20 remaining.
