You clearly have very little understanding of the economics of airlines. It is never that simple. Airlines are all about cash flow. NO airline has ever been really profitable. They are run like private little clubs for the benefit of the board and a few select others. AW and USAir are just pawns in a bigger game. Of course it is not fair for a 18 year veteran of USAir to be junior to a 6 year AW guy. But we've already been down this road.

If airlines are all about cash flow, is that the main reason AmWest bought U then?
AmWest acquired U, so the pilots of AmWest deserve better than U-- in aggregate. Just like AMR's absorption of TWA, where the AMR pilots benefitted handsomely over their financially weak competitor. Date of hire wasn't a factor except for some top senior TWA pilots who shuffled in.

poor pilot - While pilots are an important to the air transportation industry, they are only one of many parts required to keep the industry operating. While everything would come to a halt without pilots, they would also stop without mechanics, fuelers, and yes, even management. They take care of all of those important details needed to keep an airline running. Pilots can't (or won't) do it all by themselves.
And for those of you who think its OK to screw the passengers because someone has their shorts in a twist over seniority lists - none of us would have a job without them. Remember, that's where the money comes from. They have nothing to do with that issue (isn't that a union thing?) so don't take it out on them. Yeah, they may be always be looking for the cheapest ticket but who wants to pay more than they have to for a product or service?
