Is the .22 a Ruger 10-22? Great gun that everyone should have to learn the basics of shooting without the fear of recoil, and what used to be a great price for ammo. But you really also need a single shot bolt action .22 to get your kids their Scouting Shooting merit badge. Rules might have changed but mine required a single shot instead of getting to use the 10-22.
Similarly a .22 pistol should be in the safe to teach pistol shooting without the recoil.
As you know the 870 is an amazing Shotgun. Great in 20 Gauge for learning, better in 12 gauge for hunting.
You need an all around larger caliber rifle such as a Bolt action 30-06,
Then move on to the AR-15 for fun at the range and protection from the coming apocalypse.
