Default Income and Education options

Been trying to compile resources or options for pilots who need to start thinking about diversifying their income or education. The good news is pilots have “some” time, to sort out a plan.

Took a some work to compile these, but definitely open to other ideas to add. (Organized by Gig jobs, Skilled certificates, Accredited Education, Graduate programs)

P.S. the pilot demand models are still mid update so they are not that accurate, in case you venture over to that section. Of course when they are updated who knows if that will be accurate.

Great idea. I’ve been researching options. I’m late 40’s, not on anyone’s seniority list, currently in a pool at a LCC but obviously unlikely that will turn into a job. I’m thinking my flying days are over. Terrible timing to be in between jobs. 20+ year flying career could be over.

My liberal arts degree was always meant to just check a box at an airline. Hoping that I could tack on a certificate or a couple of online courses and find something.

Insurance adjuster? Something in banking? RV or car sales? Pharmacy tech? I see those popping up on Indeed a lot.

Ideally something that brings in a paycheck with benefits ASAP and has the opportunity for advancement.

Several of the majors kept their poolies during the last furlough so no reason to believe otherwise if there is one.

Did SWA just pull the plug on their pool?

Gig jobs aren't bad for supplemental and short term cash and there are certainly are a lot of different ones out there. However, some certificates like the LPN, RN (nursing world), and ones like Electrocardiography Technician or Monitor really surprised me how fast someone could qualify for those. The return on educational investment was pretty good and could be a good stop-gap until better employment can be found.

I’d be wary of any healthcare job currently. Lot of experienced people currently unemployed or underemployed.

Healthcare will probably come back sooner than some other things. Except maybe discretionary healthcare like boob jobs.
