AA's market cap has plunged from $38.8 billion in January 2015 to $8 billion today and is going nowhere but down. America West, I mean American Airlines, will soon be in bankruptcy and available for a song. I don't see why another LCC can't have a shot at running it into the ground.

Companies aren’t really acquired based on their market cap. It’s more about their enterprise value, which, for AAL is about $42.5bn today. But yeah...I’m sure allegiant or spirit will come in and buy AAL any day now.

You obviously don’t understand enterprise value. When truly evaluating your company you are going to use enterprise value with /EBITDA (which compares it to its debt or /REVENUE which compares it to rev. Both are wildly negative numbers.
This is how people value companies. Will my revenues support my debt or can I liquidate it for a profit. In both cases no.

Following this model, Maury Gallagher (google him) could buy a smaller airline, then use it as a springboard to go after a bankrupt major, just like Doug Parker did. It has happened before.
