Assaulting Flight Attendants

All true, but these masks are driving some people crazy, and that’s not just an American problem.
At some point we are going to have to question - with everybody who wants the shot already having it and many millions more immune from having COVID - if enforcing mask mandates is really worth it. https://apnews.com/article/europe-ar...90652cc96e8a5c
And perhaps decide even if we aren’t there yet just when we will be. Because the ever-moving goal posts are already causing problems.
BERLIN (AP) — Senior politicians in Germany expressed shock over the weekend killing of a young gas station clerk who asked a customer to wear a face mask, and they warned Tuesday against the radicalization of people who oppose the country’s pandemic restrictions.
A 49-year-old German man was arrested in the fatal shooting of the clerk Saturday in the western town of Idar-Oberstein. The suspect is being held on suspicion of murder.
Authorities said the man told officers he acted “out of anger” after being refused service for not wearing a mask while trying to buy beer.
“He further stated during interrogation that he rejected the measures against the coronavirus,” the Trier police department said in a statement.
A requirement to wear masks in stores is among the measures in place in Germany to stop the spread of the virus.
According to police, the suspect left the gas station after the dispute but then returned a half-hour later wearing a mask and fatally shot the 20-year-old clerk in the head.
The suspect, a German citizen who wasn’t identified by name in line with privacy laws, fled the scene and turned himself in to police on Sunday morning.
The center-left Green party’s candidate to succeed German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced dismay at the killing. Germany’s federal election is scheduled for Sunday.
“I’m shaken by this terrible murder of a young man who merely asked that existing rules be followed,” Annalena Baerbock said in a tweet.

Masks to "stop/slow" the spread seem more like a "know your place, peasant!" kinda thing.
Thank god the prerequisite of "not needed if it interferes with the performance of your duties" for pilots supersedes this mandate. As in: glasses fog up, radio/intercom readbacks are muffled, flight safety regular injections of caffeine mean no masks, etc.
Flight attendants, even the grey haired "I-don't-need-no-pilot-briefing" variety, are saints for putting up with it. Because they do, pretty much 100%, on every flight.
And they're also turning a blind eye for all but the worst offenders. Because when I watch the deplaning process, at least 10% of all passengers are walking off with the masks around their chins. I'm no medical expert, but I'm fairly certain the random rag passengers have chosen to slap across their breathing apparatus has to be in front of it to do anything.
(Hey...if this was a true pandemic, nobody would be flying, and I sure as heck wouldn't be doing the head-bob saying "thank you" to 200+ passengers from 3 feet away.)
In this, the fa's rule. By the time the complaint reaches the flight deck, I'm certain we're dealing with a special kind of jerk that thoroughly deserves the special attention about to be bequeathed to them. A mere "temporary ban" ain't enough.

Seems to me that once airborne, FA's no longer want to bother telling everyone to pull the mask up, certainly not be the one to suggest an air return. But if a pax is going to cause a scene before the door is even closed? If they can't even wait 30 minutes before "exercising their freedoms?" Then yeah, these people are problematic already and have no business on my (our) plane.

It really is a crap shoot for passengers. I bought a ticket on SWA a few weeks ago and had two legs to get to my destination. On the first flight, the FAs were very strict about the masks and made people cover their mouth and nose.
On the second flight, the FA who briefed the emergency exit rows had her mask below her chin the whole time, even while briefing the exit rows. She only pulled her mask up when the front FA started giving the safety spiel after pushback.

Amen. To me that’s the hardest part of being a captain. That is reading between the lines when a FA calls up with a problem in the back, because after 2.5 decades of commuting off and on plus all the DHs, I know that there’s truly some drama queens back there.
