I did bounce drills as an engineer on the 727. New FOs were required to do three, IIRC. We did them at Grand Bahama in the early ‘80s at EA.

I've seen pattern work training in a 737. I've seen the military do it in 767 and KC10, but disregarding that, I've definitely seen it done with civilian 737s and some other jets of similar size. I know of many 121s doing actual training in the aircraft, although I don't know of any operating very large aircraft doing the same.

The Japanese still do it. I've seen 767 and maybe the odd 787 in the pattern at Nagoya many times.

Back in the day, with the 727 and 737, the bulk of the check was accomplished in the sim with the bounces in the actual aircraft. Since then went directly to the jet from the sim with the temporary in hand. In other parts of the world, I’ve conducted in aircraft base training, in Euroland and Asia.

I got my temporary on one type at 0200, after we finished the bounces. Turned out the instructor and three students lived in the same town, so we just snagged the RON bird when it arrived at 2330.

The 747’s that fly as Air Force One do touch and goes at Richmond quite frequently.
