Default 2 year upgrades at UAL

Recent bid that closed shows 2 year upgrades in multiple bases on 320/73.

Seems like this is an important point

Having a short upgrade time while being able to not completely dump your personal life/QOL is one thing. A short upgrade time where you are doing the above mentioned routine, and watching more senior FOs upgrade when their seniority will hold a better QOL, keeping you pinned on the bottom is something completely different.

It’s like being a street captain. Sure is great to get the left seat, but then you get to spend some years watching senior FOs jump ahead of you on the bid sheet while you remain pegged at the bottom.

They’re throwing so much premium pay out there right now that there really isn’t an incentive to upgrade. I fly with FO’s all of the time who make the same as a reserve captain and have no plans to upgrade. They maintain control of their days off, fly only what they want, and make about the same money. I can’t say that I blame them.

Bingo. I will be above reserve captain pay this month with Thanksgiving off on 4th yr pay. No reason to upgrade.

Premium pay will dry up once Manning is back where it needs to be (this Spring)… only the most senior will be getting any premium pay once that occurs. This summer on 756 we were short staffed with lots of PP… this fall it’s few and far between… and the trips tagged with PP are horrible.

Right now there are 3 full pages of 737 FO trips paying 100% premium pay out to 11/25. At your longevity you’ll be buying the captain drinks since your premium 20 hr 4 day will pay $1,000 more than the captain at 12 year pay. You would get another stripe and some bling on the bill of your silly looking hat if you upgraded though. Something to think about.🙄

We’re also scheduled to take delivery of over 170 NB aircraft in the next 2 years. The growing pains should provide opportunities for more premium trips since we can only train so fast. The 756 isn’t going to get any bigger before it starts being phased out, but there will be plenty of growth on the dream guppy.

Those NB deliveries should basically seal the fate of the single class 50 seaters. Kirby just said that he wants to beat Delta in quality and not quantity. If he is even remotely serious, there is no way that our large fleet of 50 seat flying garbage cans can ever compete with what Delta offers. I guess time will tell what his plans actually are.
