UA vs AA (flow) vs UPS
#22
I’ve done quite a bit research into UPS. I’ve talked to a few pilots and read the threads here too. The lifestyle does seem to be draining and not what I see myself doing. The compensation is too large to ignore though, but I don’t have expensive tastes either. I do like the obvious advantages of boxes vs px.
AA stays in the running just because of CLT, and the old saying to always live in base, and I agree with that, but I’ve got a ticket with both UA and UPS now. This is indeed a good problem to have.

Living in CLT should make for an easy commute with UPS and AA jumpseats. And it will make life much easier when you have commercial deadhead trips since they would likely be single legs to and from CLT.

If your heart is set on wide body flying, take UPS and never look back.
After having done it for several years, I’m happy to fly transcons or spend my days in the Caribbean.
AA may be appealing for obvious reasons, but CLT isn’t exactly junior, and to do any wide body flying you’ll be commuting to JFK, DFW or MIA for a long time.
You wouldn’t have wasted your time applying AND asking us if you wanted to go to AA…

Data point:
I’m at UAL and met a pilot who used to work at UPS who is now here.
I asked him why he left UPS, isn’t that the Golden ticket etc etc.
He showed me a schedule of his. It looked absolutely brutal. Late departures, night sort, back out again. And it was a multi-day trip of the same stuff.
I hate redeyes and couldn’t imagine doing more than one to finish a trip, followed by multiple days off. And you can avoid them with a little seniority.
