I’m definitely leaning towards Avelo, just trying to ensure I make the correct choice
what's your end goal? Stay at avelo or go to a major?
If it's the latter what will get you PIC hrs quicker or hrs for that matter. Not sure how much you can fly at avelo but I bet you can fly as much as you want at envoy and upgrade quicker.

How will you determine that?

End goal is to ultimately get to a legacy/Southwest.I have friends at Envoy, and they’re sitting airport reserve, and flying 40 hours max a month.

Living in a place that is tolerable for the time being, while also flying as much as possible, and making a comfortable wage. I want to fly for the company that will progress my career the quickest.

that's good info. Maybe someone at avelo can shed light on how much flying per base and what you need to upgrade.
Possible to apply to another regional that's flying more?

At a regional it’s expected that you are looking beyond them. ULCC may not like that.

[QUOTE=cchouse434;3612316]I currently have 2 CJOs, 1 from Envoy, and 1 from Avelo, and I’m trying to see if Avelo is the right fit for me.

From my understanding, I will have to pay for my ATP/CTP course/written, but will Avelo pay for my ATP certificate, or will I have to pay for that out of pocket?

From what I have been reading on the forums, HVN is the current junior base, but how long is it taking to hold RDU, or MCO? Ideally, I would move to base, but HVN just does not seem like the place for me. How big of a hassle is it to commute from RDU - HVN, or MCO - HVN, whether it be on company metal or another airline?

What’s the stability of Avelo? Will I constantly wake up, and in my commute to the airport be wondering if the doors have closed, or is it a relatively “secure” job?

Is the pilot group currently satisfied with the operation?

I don’t know what the current hiring requirements are at Avelo, maybe you can check out the Avelo APC page. Or reach out to any Avelo recruiter. They will have a good answer to the ATP/CTP questions. I recently flew with a ATP School student. He applied with a ATPF and Avelo checked the rest of those boxes. Like I said, contact the Avelo recruiters for a good answer.
Living at base is the absolute best. I’m a commuter and paid my HVN dues. Commuting there is not easy. Own metal is fine but I don’t live at any of the cities Avelo serves. I commuted either through BDL (local train to HVN train station), EWR, JFK or LGA (2 hour train ride to HVN). So if you plan to live in HVN, that will make your life much easier. You will have to opportunity to pickup open time, make extra cash while you build time. There are some guys that can hold MCO but prefer HVN because they have much more money to make there and can be senior at a junior base. Lines are somewhere between 70-85 hours a month. If you have the FAR PIC Mins, you will be upgraded.
RDM and ILG are new bases so I don’t really know how long it would take for someone to hold them. But I think it would be safe to say you could expect at least 1 year to move out of HVN???
There is no such thing as a stable job in the aviation business. We’ve seen giants collapse, reinvent themselves to later disappear again. The big 3 have grown and shrunk so many times that nobody is keeping track anymore. ULCC’s are probably less likely to furlough or shutdown thanks to their business model. People will always want to travel and travel cheap. The big 3 depend on business and international travel and those 2 travel groups are the first to dwindle every time the economy hits its cyclical low. If you want to be a part of a growing project, build time and upgrade once you meet the FAA PIC minimums, Avelo is the where you would probably want to be. It is a startup, and that itself implies, for some frustration. I came from one of those Legacy carriers where everything was said and done. You are a number and the constant head butting with the Company was exhausting. Here we build as we move forward. Yes, the Chief Pilot is a tool. But people like him come and go. I’ve seen his kind before and they eventually are weeded out. But don’t let that distract you. You’ll enjoy flying in and out of HVN. BUR is also planning to grow some more. Frontline folks are an absolute joy to work with. Training is ok. Pay could be better if you’re a Captain, but FO pay is competitive.
Good luck

Thank you for the insight. Progressing my career is definitely a priority, so moving to HVN sounds like the correct thing to do. I’m excited about my opportunity to fly with Avelo, just trying to get all the information I can, before committing to my first 121 job.

Does avelo offer flights benefits on other airlines and if so, how heavily are the tickets discounted and does my family get them too?

Avelo employees and their families have pass travel benefits with Avelo and most Airlines. You only pay a few bucks (taxes) with Avelo and prices for other airlines depend on the interline agreements. The other airlines set their prices and restrictions, not Avelo. We have CASS with all airlines, including FEDEX and UPS and most recently JetBlue. KCM until the TSA decides to take that away from all crewmembers in America.
