In the process of trying to gauge a jump to United from a LCC. Was wondering what those who have made the jump what your reason for leaving was and how you like the decision to do so along with QOL and overall happiness with the decision to go

I made the jump from an LCC in base (1hr drive), to a drive three and a half times longer than I was doing. I would say I for sure took a QOL hit initially but will have a line soon (on property less than a year). I find myself once in awhile wondering how things would be at the LCC being such and easy job and airplane but am more excited for my future at the legacy. Overall, I would have made the same decision again but I wouldn’t say it’s as overwhelming as I initially thought it would be in favor of the legacy.

If you are going from in base to in base, no brainer. If you are going from a commute to in base, even more of a no brainer. Everyone’s situation is different but that’s mine.

Interesting, I find myself asking the same question ngl. Currently, drive to work at an LCC in Orlando, and the only legacy I have would be UA. wondering if the Jump is worth it. Still have 40 years in my career but curious about what this merger will be all about and the slight possibility of widebodies in the future.

QOL is atrocious at UAL at least on the narrowbody. I’m close to 50% in my junior base and I’ve been working 90 hour lines with min days off for almost a year now. Can’t drop or trade trips, no min reserve coverage as the company can set whatever number they want.

if you want to fly a widebody then it’s a clear winner as that side of the operation is a different airline. If you don’t want to fly long haul and just want to fly narrowbody you will be stuck in the trenches taking grenades for years.

Hm. I'm also at UA on a NB close to 50%. I dont think I've had less than 15 days off in the last year. Where are you based?

I don’t think MCO would be hard to get quickly as almost anywhere you can get within a vacancy bud or two (Guam excluded). With 40 years left, living in base, I would say make the jump. I have less than 30 years left and a family and drive much further now, so that’s why I say it’s not as overwhelming as I thought it would be once on property. I’m happy to be at a legacy and think long term it’ll be the right choice but I know for certain I would have been completely happy at an LCC for life as well.

Another way of looking it is that you’ve only been at a legacy for a very short time and you’re already 50% in your seat. Perhaps you should count your blessings?

I'm third year at B6 and this is my greatest fear about going to UAL, however, they have a lot of the bases I'd like to live in. Are the trading/dropping constraints likely to improve in the upcoming contract?

ORD would be the base I’m hoping to have if I go. I don’t have any interest in the WB stuff at this point at least. Maybe that will change one day. But currently trying to weigh United vs a merger and what will be the better option along with the fact that with hiring being as high as it is there’s good seniority to be had in a short amount of time.

I'm not United and not to downplay BirdOn's situation, but one thing you need to keep in mind is that their widebodies are going to newhires, which means that a large percentage of their narrowbody pilots are saying 'no' to that kind of flying. If everyone's narrowbody flying was as terrible as BirdOn's, I don't think you'd see the widebody going so junior.
