Mystery Surronds FAA Halt to West Coast flts

The halt coincided with North Korea's missile test. Ground stops were ordered to all planes, at least in the Western US. Happened 1/10 at 1430PST. Lasted between 7-20 minutes before ops normal.

Well, that was mildly terrifying.

Last time there was a ground stop like this was 9/11. Started on the east coast and rolled westward.

I was flying on 9/11, when the controllers started saying "national ground stop", my first thought was "nuclear detonation".

This had the same vibe. Maybe someone made a mistake issuing a "Nuclear Strike inbound, seek shelter immediately" alert like they did in Hawaii a few years ago.

(if indeed, that's what actually happened)

If the NoK missile hit certain profile gates, the GBI missiles at vandenburg would launch. VAFB is on the central coast so the fewer planes in the air, the better.

They would not hold the launch for flight safety, with a possible inbound nuke.

Not a mistake. They just needed to verify the missile trajectory, which is not immediately apparent at launch.

Especially when it’s hitting Mach 10. Holy smoking holey….

Worth noting, nobody thought they really launched a nuke (or a non-nuke) at CONUS, but the possibility is so high and right on the ORM chart that they have to take it seriously regardless.

Just a miscommunication.

The LRDR at Clear had this thing doped out pretty quick

The FAA sucks. They were told NBD but the bureaucrats there choked on it. Just more incompetence from .gov

Get used to it.

Looks like you're at 35,000 ft over the desert. Please land at LAX or another large city immediately for incoming nukes.

It was to avoid getting hit by the interceptors, or more importantly to avoid the interceptors getting hit by YOU.

LOL, by the time they are on the ground the game is already over. I think in the 90s when I was still playing soldier time on target was less than 30 mins. With hypersonic nukes we’ll still be briefing the approach and it already looks like the playground scene from Terminator at the destination.

if I’m off that day I’ll be sure to face the nuke and drop prone using my Kevlar helmet as a shield. 😂 😂😂😂
