Little problem there... how do you know it's drugs and not something a wee bit more hazardous? Yeah I know, if you're in latin america it's going to be drugs but are you going to take the chance? It would also be hard to explain that you knowingly departed with unknown contraband onboard.
Maybe call in sick and catch the first flight back to CONUS?

It was 200 kilos of coke. That's more than a couple of suitcases full of coke.
I wouldn't strand my passengers and crew in a foreign country for that. It sounds like we have completely different views on Captain's responsibility in adverse situations.

But DR will be on my bid avoid if I switch to a fleet that goes there.

I was going to use the freezing of bank accounts like he did to those who sent donations to support the protesting truckers but couldn't figure a good way to weave it into the storyline.
Nice. You're still stranding the innocent passengers.

Your PIC authority doesn't extend quite as far as you think it does.

Absolutely. If you're going to fly a plane loaded with unknown but certainly illegal contraband back to the US, in contravention to all law, regulation, and common sense just to avoid inconveniencing the pax, we'll have to agree to disagree on that.

How do you even know it's not authorized cargo?
You really should read a bit about this particular incident. It was a CRJ-100 with 200 kilos of coke.
And everyone has been detained; crew and passengers.

How would you KNOW it's contraband? You don't. That's why you call for customs to inspect the aircraft.

How would anyone know it’s drugs and not explosives

They found unknown foriegn material in a MAINTENANCE COMPARTMENT... there's no legal or company approved allowance to disregard that. To say nothing of common sense. That's not just a customs issue that's a big security issue too. I'm intimately familiar with that plane, and there's no way ANYTHING should be stored in any external compartment but the one and only cargo bin.
Obvious lesson learned is don't report it to the locals, just GTFO asap.
