what you don’t have any experience with the state department? How do you even become an airline pilot? I also have lots of experience with the department of homeland security.
bro do you even go inside embassies???
and I’m not talking about the Embassy suites on your layover

So for Rickair and dualinput, I hinted at doing a quick Google search for more detailed information, but ... too hard?

Looks like about a dozen bags. Extremely low prrobability of being a bomb.
As for calling in sick, what's the crew desk going to do? Probably get you a hotel room there and fly in a new CA.
Now, what's your FOM say to do for a possible bomb? Likely to call local authorities and have the aircraft searched. Oops.
So, even if you were to try to escape by hopping on another airline flight out of there after calling in sick, what about the rest of the crew? They're going to be screwed.
Plus the aircraft will be impounded for a very long time.
And now if drugs are found on the plane and you split the country, who is going to be the most likely suspect? At that point, your concern will be whether or not the country where you left the jet and crew has an extradition treaty with the US, because you're going to look guilty AF. Like the B6 flight attendant/mule who left a big ol bag of coke at LAX security and ran away a few years ago.
Margaritaville explained the situation. But sure, go for the riskier option, because a dozen or so duffel bags is what a bomb might look like??
No, I'm much more comfortable flying the plane, passengers, and crew back to the US, shutting my mouth, and lawyering up. As opposed to possibly having an arrest warrant from the country I just fled hanging over my head and probably getting canned by my airline for abandoning the aircraft,, passengers, and crew. But sure, you do you.

BTW, you need to know how to open that avionics door, it's a pressure plug type door and take a special procedure. Pilots don't open that door unless directed my MX. This crew had two pilots, two F/As and a mechanic. The mechanic found the bag, don't know why he would have been in there unless they had a maintenance issue or company routine security check? The plane had sat for several days and was preparing for the return flight.
This sure make Canada look weak, as if they needed help with that.

If this was to happen to an American carrier with a global presence (AA, DAL, UA, etc), I don't see this going down the same way. Not likely a 3rd world sh*thole like DR would arrest and detain two American pilots.
Or am I wrong here?

yeah, but it ain’t an American Carrier with a global presence. It’s a tiny startup with one (1) aircraft, a CRJ-100, from a country not known for its military might. In fact, the military manpower of the DR is 25% greater than that of Canada.

So, if you were a terrorist, you'd opt to use that much explosives? OK.

They were up in the avionics bay, stick your head up there and look back into a long tunnel and see a black bag? When the cops came they pulled it out and see another behind it, and another etc.

The mechanic was probably doing a security check since the plane sat for several days.
After this is all over, I'd be curious to hear what the pilots would have done differently.
