Let's get real: home theater is a hobby, like many others we spend time and money on. Does it give the exact same experience as a pristine commercial theater with all of the bells and whistles? No, but then again, most commercial theaters don't either. You can certainly get very close with the right selection of equipment and room design. So close that it's really not worth bothering to go out to a commercial theater anymore, not if you can walk 30 feet, close the door and replicate it on your own couch. A 120" projected image from 12 feet is plenty big, a nearly 40 degree field of view. Set it up in a room with carefully chosen sound treatment and speakers, and it can be better than most commercial theaters since you don't have to compromise on tuning the system to reach a large audience. Use good source material (ultra HD blu rays are the gold standard) and you can watch even older movies in a quality that was unavailable when it was released in theaters. Even something as mundane as streaming a series from Netflix or Amazon is so well produced now (4K, HDR, Atmos) that it becomes an experience vs binge watching on your tablet.
Since Maverick has already been pushed out of Imax theaters then I'll pick up the UHD disc in a couple of months and not look back.
