Having lived in ATL, IAD, and CLT, and commuted to / from almost all of them at one time, I think you’ll find the CLT-ATL commute easier than the CLT-IAD/EWR commute.
Delta also seems to have much more mainline presence in CLT than United does.
But at this time United appears to be the better run airline and also offers the better seniority progression.
If you do move to base, you’ll find ATL to be pretty similar to CLT; more so than Northern Virginia.

This was really the main difference I could think of. We like it in CLT so I was going to attempt the commuting life for at least 12 months. I'm sure my wife will be ready to move to EWR after a year of me losing a day on each side of the trip and not helping with the baby.

Another vote for deciding which hub you are willing to relocate to, take the job that most aligns with your top pick, and then relocate when you're ready.
Don't forget UAL has IAD/DCA/BWI as a base. I don't know if that region is more agreeable to you coming from NC versus ATL/JFK/EWR.
