Telex Airman 8+

Anyone have one of these? What is the comfort and durability like? I love my DC Pro-X, but it would be nice having something that doesn't need batteries. I had a first gen Telex Airman 8 long ago and found the headband very uncomfortable. Seems like they have remedied that.

They’re light and comfortable, and it’s nice to not have to buy batteries. The noise canceling is fine for a 320, but I’m not sure how good it would be in a louder aircraft though.

We had the older ones as ship sets for the E190 when sennheiser stopped making the ones we had, which did pretty good, and the telex were awful to the point guys would refuse the airplane unless Mx dug up a set of sennheisers. They were pretty bad and you had to crank the volume to the point of uncomfortable to hear the com. The 190 is generally loud fast and low so your results may vary. We have the pro-Xs now and they’re fine.

I upgraded to the 8+ from my 850s. They are a nice upgrade and perfectly adequate for the 75/76. No batteries is awesome and they are lightweight as well as reasonable cost.

I used Bose in louder aircraft so I can't recommend them for every application.

Does the ANR work if the hot mic is off?

it sure does

I use it in the 737. Comfortable enough and just enough ANC.

Rumor has it the 8 was not much of an upgrade from the 850 (I skipped it) but the 8+ is a nice headset if you don't like batteries.

Tried the 8+ for a few weeks and the noise cancelling was decent in the bus but they started hurting my ears after a few hours but my ears stick out maybe more than others. I ordered the DC pro x2 after borrowing the original from a friend but it’s been back ordered forever.

I’d be interested in buying your pro x if they are in good shape

I tried one and returned it…..the Pro-X2 completely blows it out of the water for build quality, padding, suspension system, etc. The Telex frame feels like a bent coat hanger and I found the earpads hard and uncomfortable. Batteries are cheap at Costco, and actually the Pro-X2 has pretty good passive attenuation because the pads are so soft and pliable….sometimes I forget to turn on the ANR in the 737 and it’s just fine…..even better if you wear plugs underneath.

So buy the DC, deal with batteries and still wear ear plugs when wearing them? Not a great selling point if “ear plugs make it better”

Now you make me feel like a weirdo, for wearing the DC one X, with earplugs in King Airs…..

Do what works for you on a loud turboprop. I’m just shocked to hear someone say how great the ANR is on a certain aircraft and then talk about using foamies with them, on a 737. I’m on the A320 and telex ANR works great. The 8+ is almost too much ANR for the plane’s noise

Why buy a telex when every other manufacturer offers Bluetooth? Prox2 gang

Why do you need Bluetooth?

So I can listen to Katy perry on final

but also so that I can make very comfortable calls to maintenance at dispatch without trying to listen to some blown out phone speaker

Weight, space taken up in my bag, no need to buy batteries, comfort (which is subjective)

I love my Bose but don't miss hauling it around. BT was ok for listening to music but I don't find it to be a killer feature.

Same, rather have apple AirPods pro in the bag for my Megadeth on short final and those calls to mx and dispatch.

The only appropriate Megadeth song to listen to on short final is High Speed Dirt

I like it extra quiet, and I like the treble-y edge taken off of the comms. Anyone else can customize (or not) as they see fit.

Amazing how perfect that song relates to short final.

Forgot to mention, I felt the 8+ provided case was garbage, and it was comically large.
