I actually see this will increase competition as it opens the JetBlue network to people who live near spirit routes and visa versa.

You probably have converging interests among the big players (the government and big 3). The current administration’s interest in squashing business and the big 3’s interest in having one stronger competitor vs 2 weaker ones.

Indeed. Strangely enough, under the old regulation model if an airline got in bad enough shape financially a larger (or at least more prosperous) airline was often COMPELLED to buy them. And if either JetBlue or Spirit do poorly enough, that’s sort of what I’d expect DOJ to be pushing for now to avoid the loss of competition that woukd otherwise occur. The DOJ anti monopoly people are a kind of schizophrenic lot. I expect a slap down from a court is coming their way if they don’t find a compromise that will let them save face, declare victory, and get out. Perhaps with a few modifications to gates and slots.

some good news for the Spirit/JetBlue merger!

The judge assigned to the case seems to be favorable.

let’s hope it is speedy as they say it goes to summary judgment.
