Best Airline for Initial QOL
I’m a mil pilot with a CJO from SWA, AA, UA, DAL. I’m interested in cargo, but I’m 50 PIC hours shy of 1000.
I’d like to hear your thoughts on which airline could provide the best QoL while my kids are little (they’re just starting elementary school). QoL for me means living in domicile and maximizing my time at home for the first 5 years or so.
I grew up overseas, so I don’t have geographic ties to a specific location, but prefer to live in a lower cost of living area.
My initial thought is to fly for United at IAH due to their projected seniority progression and wide body growth plans.
In my circle of friends, it seems Delta is the “place to be” with their new contract. However, I’m concerned about their slower rate of seniority progression after using the widget seniority.

The only decent United hub is Denver which supposedly is turning into the homeless capital of the USA. AA has the best hubs for settling down with a family followed with the best seniority progression but you never mentioned AA so it sounds like your heart isn’t with AA. The same deal for me as I chose DL over AA. You will have less seniority progression at DL but your QOL will be significantly better at DL compared UAL. United QOL due to their terrible reserve rules and inefficiency with trips for line holders makes their QOL the industry worst IMHO. Most UAL pilots will never admit that though for whatever reason. I would sit back and consider how much of UAL is just hype by a CEO trying to nickel and dime their pilots in negotiations for a new contract.

If red-state suburbia suits you, IAH is straightforward and easy to get.
If you wanna get 1000 and move on, don’t go to southwest.
Otherwise there are arguments for all of them. United requires 12 months before upgrade. delta may have a quicker shot at 50 pic but you’ll definitely be bottom of the totem pole til brown or purple call.

You want to live in IAH? also known as the arm pit of Texas?

And “red state suburbia?” LOL
Why it’s bold is unknown.

The big advantage for Delta is that their contract is done with improved QOL and pay already settled. Their downside is slower seniority progression as compared to other majors. Everyone else is still in negotiations with uncertainty as to when they'll get caught up.

We already had the best reserve rules at Delta prior to our new contract and now they’re even better. By the time you’re done with Indoc you’ll be on 18 long call and most trips will be covered two days in advance.
You may not be senior enough to hold reserve
