It takes all kinds I guess...

My J/S story...

I was the CA on the first flight out of IND to DTW. Usually always full with plenty of mainline nonrevs. While F/O and I are completing a checklist a mainline CA sticks his head in and says, word for word, "I'm a 747 CA and if I don't get to DTW 400 people are gonna be stuck!" No good morning, or can I bum a ride, or anything.

So I play dumb(which is pretty much all the time anyway)and say "Who do you work for?" And do the docs/certs rigamaroo. By then another J/Ser (co-worker)comes up to say what's up and offers his seat so the 747 CA can get to DTW and fight for truth, justice, and the American Way.

On another note I had another mainline J/Ser who trasitioned from the -9 to the Bus and was asking all kinds of questions about the RJ. He was a recent graduate of the 'church of glass' and a stand up guy. I was doing IOE on a new Captain at the time but it felt kinda good to swap stories with that dude.

We had almost the exact situation with a mainline US capt last winter in the dash (330 capt, not 74). As usual, we were weight restricted and unable to take him. He proceeded to tell us how to operate our aircraft and that jumpseaters were figured into B.O.W. The capt told him to get off, we couldn't take him. Later when we boarded all of the pax we see the guy get on, he had called scheduling and they put him as a must ride bumping another pax.

On the other hand, I had a NWA 747 Capt who was nonreving offer to sit in the FA jumpseat so I could sit in the cockpit between MSP and DTW.

What a Jerk !!

To bintynogin:

After 25+ years in the business, your unfortunate experience takes the cake.

A jumpseat "ride" is a courtesy extended by the Captain to another crewmember. Yes, the Captain does control the jumpseat, with the exception of company Check Airmen giving checks, the FAA and others on "official business" but requesting the jumpseat is nothing more than that. You followed protocol by just introducing yourself, being professional and respectfully asking for a ride. If you happen to encounter a jerk, simply say thanks and leave the cockpit. To have someone give you the "third degree" and demand to be addressed as "Captain"...., well I think I'd told him to shove it and left.

You handled the situation well !!
