Leaving Airline for Air Line

APC Team,

I’m in training for an airline and have a class date for another air line.

Will airline find out when air line requests my drug test forms / background check?

Yes, but airline probably won’t care that air line is requesting it. You’re not the first one to leave airline for another air line. Other people have also left air line for other airlines, especially in the past few years. It’s just the way it is in this hiring environment.

Just continue to give it 120% at your current airline until you leave for the new air line and leave on good terms. Never **** people off or burn bridges in this industry.

Wait, I thought we're supposed to be peeing on bridges that are burning. I'm confused....

What won't happen: Current Airline (which I will call X) is not going fire you for looking elsewhere (in this case Air Line hehehehehe Delta which I will call Y) and then you have to tell Y you have been terminated this jeopardizing your employment at both places. Thats not going to happen....UNLESS you told X you had some family emergency on the day you interviewed at Y........but even then that would require the person who gets the request to be a super sleuth and connect the dots.

If you really wanted to be extra credit model of integrity why not just resign from X now. That way nobody is stuck with last second seat support and maybe a crew could be paired together for the remainder of thier training that wouldn't otherwise be.......remember you are taking somebody's spot.
I don't expect you to do that, especially if you think you might get typed before your Y class starts and most especially if Y doesn't have the type your typing on. I would caution you that if it maybe a shared type.....you aren't helping yourself by getting X procedures pounded into your head....,that's only going to hurt you at Y and will anger (however irrational that may be) the Y instructors.
Or you might be just in it for more stay credits at Mariott or Hilton Honors.

You may also be hesitant to resign thinking of redundancy, I will only say that if there is a Black Swan both classes will be cancelled so....

If this is TLDR....just remember to put in 2 weeks notice.....and don't worry about anything else.

I'm pretty big on integrity. But large corporations will show you none whatsover when the tables are turned. I would not lie to them, but you're certainly not obligated to inform them or resign early... you haven't even 100% committed to resigning, because if the industry hits a black swan you certainly won't.

Based on industry history and my personal experience I wouldn't resign one day earlier than absolutely necessary.

However, and this is a biggy, where would you rather be on 9/12...

1. Almost done with training at career-destination airline A
2. Just starting training at career-destination airline B
3. Unemployed.

1 or 2 are vastly better, because even though you're getting furloughed either way, you have a seniority number and recall rights at a career airline.

If you're on the street, you'll have to wait for all recalls, and then start applying. Are you even current, were you able to land a turbine gig in a downturn? Do you meet whatever their revised competitive mins and identity criteria are, years later? Do you have a recent type training event?

I'd vastly prefer to have a number at a career airline, I'd minimize that airgap to the greatest degree possible.

Frankly I wouldn't resign early just to cash out vacation... that's rolling the dice, odds are in your favor but I know people who've ended up unemployed with no number in a big downturn over a few grand $ (2008 and 2020). I'd talk to the union and understand how much notice you need to give to avoid adverse separation status.

I switched airlines many years ago, and the wife had vacation plans. She wanted me to resign now and take a later class date (about three weeks). I did, but I sure didn't enjoy that vacation much... I dreaded turning on the TV each morning.

Yes, some part of the airline will find out... that doesn't mean your CPO will find out, unless you work at FedEx or a **** regional, which doesn't sound like you do.

If you want the possibility to return to airlines, give 2 weeks notice. If you don't care about blowing up bridges send an email resigning effective immediately at 1159pm the morning before you start class at air line, and bcc your personal email a copy.
