Filthy Cockpits

Filthy Cockpits
Over the past few years many of us have watched our respective companies cut costs and services internally (hows that for an understatement).
One of the things that bugs me at my airline is the general cleanliness of the cockpit. A few years ago, cleaning the cockpit was taken away from maintenance and assigned to the outsourced contract cleaners. I know cleaning the flight deck isn't all that glamorous, but when maintenance performed this function they took pride in their work and planes were spotless.
Now, I honestly don't think the cockpit of our jets have been cleaned since.
I carry wipes to scrub down boom mics, hand mics, and maybe the yoke. Today I decided to wipe out the handhold used to get leverage to adjust the seat, and was pretty well convinced of the cleaning schedule of these jets.
So my question is: how does your company take care of your workspace - mine doesn't.

Are you sure those were chicken bones? Could be the remains of a mechanic that went under there to clean the boogers.

Since I fly the same airplane every trip (and consider it as "mine" without the benefit of having to pay the bills), we keep our office clean ourselves.
Screen wipes and a little shop vac with the computer cleaning accessory kit can do a lot of good. It also gets a good detailing when it goes in for phased maintenance (about every 4-6 months).

We have a responsibility, too...
I was in seat 1A on a 145 this summer...I was amazed at the junk the crew had lying around. USA Today sections everywhere, bid pack, and the F/O couldn't find the MEL 'cause it had slipped into a dunkin' donuts box. It was literally spilling out of the cockpit. What a mess. If I was a fed who wanted to ride observer, my first impression would have been terrible, not to mention the impression passengers (customers!) get. Not saying the crew would let anything slide, but a clean, neat cockpit can speak volumes about our professionalism. Not to mention save your life (fire, etc). I always tried to leave just a pad and pen for the next guys. HSLD is dead on about MX, too...
