Default Southern NH

Looking for info on relocating to southern New Hampshire. Will be based in Boston and will be doing day trips, so commute time to BOS is important. Other things I'm looking for are good schools, relatively low taxes (I know they're high), and good, safe neighborhoods.

Any info would be appreciated. Looking to spend anywhere south of 290k for a house.

Thanks,

GP

I believe when you consider the overall tax burden, you find NH taxes are amongst the lowest in the country.

I recommend the seacoast area of NH, specifically the Exeter area is one of the best in the state for school districts. North Hampton is another good bet for schools. The two are both about 1hr drive time to BOS, so it is do-able with day trips. In the Exeter school district it seems the tax rates can range from $20-22 per $1000 of assessed home value. In the Hampton area it is slightly lower, around $16-20 per $1000. You should be able to find something in the sub-$290k range for housing, for a 3-4bed 2 bath place. Good luck!

S. NH is a little expensive. Right now is a great time to buy, prices are down on homes. Consider somewhere off of route 101. There are many small towns that should be great locations for a family and affordable. Manchester is another option, not far from BOS. Depending on the time of day the comute could be hecktic. Good luck

Guppy. Check out http://www.city-data.com for all sorts of stats for every city and zip code in the country.

Their forum, http://www.city-data.com/forum/, if very active. A great way to get in touch with the locals to get the inside scoop on where to live.

Shoot me a PM. I live on the seacoast of NH and commute out of BOS.

I live in a GREAT town in a real nice area that has a lot to offer.

If you want a city vs a town, Portsmouth is real nice, C&J has an hourly shuttle to BOS and for airline people it's around $80 for 10 one ways (that data is a few yrs old, maybe someone can chime in with the current prices). It saves you the driving/gas and allows you a one hour nap to/from work. Taxes run about $17/1000k value. It's 5 minutes from the ocean/beach (but on the river), has the malls and bars/restaurants to keep most people happy. Compared to FL, real estate is way overpriced up there but the market will get what it can...

Ditto on Portsmouth. If I had it to do all over again, that's where I would be in New Hampshire. Exeter and North Hampton being good alternatives.

C&J runs $93 for 10 one-way passes for a 40-day period now. Always on schedule and nice comfy ride to/from work.
