Funny, met a bunch of new hires at the Double Tree last night on a DEN overnight at the bar. Money didn't seem to be a problem when the tab came. Lot's of credit cards flying around.
Good bunch of guys nontheless. I'll bet you a month's pay that they weren't new hires. |
For what it is worth
The practice of UAL not paying for a hotel during training has been in place since at least 99', it is not a new policy. Some folks get hooked up in a crash pad or rent a room to keep the cost in check.
On the other hand, the pay scale is pretty dismal and you can look at the post 9/11 (translation: bankruptcy) era for that added insult to injury. No signs of it getting better any time soon. Having said that, UAL is still better than a lot of non-majors out there. Got to find that out for myself while I was furloughed for two years. |
Dec 09 I believe is when UAL can amend their contract.
Hopefully AS will lead the way, then my AA will get a decent contract. UAL would have to get better. Things can't stay the same at UAL is my opinion. So for those who say "I'd never work there" I think you're missing an opportunity. If you're young/er and can look beyond 2010 then apply. I have friends at UAL that are no happy to miserable right now. But they do believe things will not stay the same. At AA our contract is ammenable May 08' We still have 2367 furloughed. We are recalling, I think 2 years b4 we hire. Go to UAL asap if you can. I think it's wrong for UAL not to pay lodging. But in the long run. Well say no more. |

I paid for my own accommodations in '97 too - shared a 2 bedroom apartment with a new-hire classmate. I also provided for my own accommodations when hired with a commuter back in the day - so it's not a practice that's unique to United. The airlines do it because they can. Back when I was flight instructing and looking for a commuter job, most places required that you pay for your own training as well - usually 10 grand or more. Now THAT I couldn't afford! Paying for my own room in training seemed like a pretty good trade-off to me! |

Oh my... you have got to be kidding me? They dont pay for your hotel room?? What about Per Diem, they have to pay that right? I have flown for some of the worst dirt bag carriers out there and even they paid for your hotel room. And whats with the RJ-like pay rates? I never thought that I would say this but it sounds like qualified guys may not be able to afford going to United. Here is a quick math check:
Monthly pay- $2,216.2 After 18% Tax- 1,817.12 Split a $80 hotel room with a buddy that snorze all nite - $1,200 Whats left to send home to the wife not including food - $617.12 Even if the pay per diem your most likely going to drink and it and eat it anyway. xxxxxxxxxxxx |

I'm at AA. But, if I was 40yrs or younger, i'd go to UAL if offered a job. Yeah, it's sucks that right now they're not paying for room and per diem.
If you can get through the 1st year on credit cards and are under 40 yrs old, the future is looking better for the Legacy carriers. Pay for a Hotel or pay for a 737 type and try to get on at SWA. Hey, I was a commuter/regional guy. I remember lots of guys that couldn't afford to try for the majors due to large house payments, kids, heroin addiction (just kidding). But if you can, even UAL which has no domestic duty rigs right now, but will get better on their next contract, I think it'd be a great move. But hey, i stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. |
Don't apply if you don't like the compensation package... it's a free world... but you have to pay for your room!!!
Cheers, Russ P.S. Good luck to all the new hires at UAL... I think you will like it in the long run. |

Perfect...that is why I have a 11/12 class date at United. Top of the hiring wave...might want to check their retirement numbers before you yap. |
