IMHO
Old mergers were smaller fractions of the market. The legacies merger now would create too big of an airline for the Department of Justice to approve the deal. Only if the airlines are dying and oil is $200 would it be possible.

The rest is just the Wall Street gibberish to get the logos in the press and drive the stock prices.
